Higgy 0 Posted January 12, 2006 (edited) Hi, Just wondering if someone could put my mind at ease. This engine was apparently re-built, but upon starting it had a major oil leak from near the flywheel. I have just taken off the clutch & flywheel, and to me it seems as if the crankshaft oil seal is missing? I have not looked/work on bottom end before but it certainly looks like a seal is missing? Oil seal missing? Looking at the block & inside the cam cover it suggests that something has been done to the engine as its bloody clean. Also, looking through the spark plug hole you can clearly see a 'B'? on the tops of the pistons. Cheers, Higgy. Edited January 12, 2006 by Higgy

Higgy 0 Posted January 12, 2006 Yep, its definatly not there mate. Cheers, thought as much. Luckily the engine was not run long and the cam lobs have not run dry. The engine is from a Mi16x4 so it is a real ball ache removing enough of the gearbox/transfer box etc to even have a look at the flywheel once the engine is in the car. The previous owner got p*ssed off with it once he started it and oil was gushing out, and he lost all interest in the car. Not too sure how you forget putting a large oil seal like that in. Never mind I supose is it possible just to buy the seal? If someone has the diamensions I can probably get it through compaines we use at work.
Anthony 1,003 Posted January 12, 2006 You can buy the seal on it's own - I'm 99% sure it's the same as the 8v one. Of course, if something fairly major like that was missed, then what else was messed up during the rebuild would be my concern...
easypug 0 Posted January 12, 2006 Ok i make the outside diameter 109mm and in the inside diameter 90mm, that was measured with a ruler (and by eye) though so not sure how accurate it will be. You can press the seal on with your hands and push home with a drift or similar
