Pulling To The Right Under Accelaration

Recommended Posts

ok the car is a standard 205 1.6 Gti

there is something very wrong with the suspension

when accelerating hard the car will pull to the right but the steering will centralise itself if you let go of the steering wheel (turns about 1/2 an inch)

its more noticable at speed ie above 45mph

and on right hand corners it can be quite dangerous as it can really bite in if you give it the slightest throttle (more noticable at speed and quite dodgy on motorway bends)

if you freewheel round right handers it feels like there is no grip at all at the front (then you give it a bit of throttle and your on the other side of the road if your not ready for it)

it really feels as if something is hanging off it but i cant find anything

ive checked

all the wishbone bushes

ball joints

checked both front brakes werent sticking

its had a new steering rack fitted recently (by dodgy local garage)

the problem is gradually getting worse and i still cant see anything wrong

any ideas?

hope my description makes sense

I had the same problem, turned out to be the wishbone bushes, even after a garage had looked at it and could see nothing wrong.

Indeed sounds like wishbone bushes. Did you jack the wheels up when you checked them for movement? This takes the stress off every thing and makes it easier to see movement in the bushes.

Its been covered quite a lot, a search should of brought this up.

Me too.

I only found out what the issue was when I went to have the 4 wheel alignment done and they spotted a worn rear bush on the wishbone.

I've had a search and thought i'd checked everything

when i checked the wishbone bushes it was jacked up with the wheel off

and I tried moving the bushes with a big screwdriver and there wasnt much movement

I actually replaced the passenger side wishbone last year so it shouldnt be a problem

as for the driveshaft, I replaced both about a yr and a half ago but the boot came off the passenger side one, I then repacked it with grease

but there is no knocking when turning or when accelerating

I dont really understand how a worn driveshaft would cause it to pull to the side (especially if its not worn enough to be knocking)

on my old car (1.1 205) i replaced the driveshafts after they got to the knocking stage and didnt notice any handling effects

also I 1st noticed the problem when i drove from scotland to coventry in september, I have since driven home again and back to coventry

It has got worse in that time hence why i spent a day messing about over x-mas trying to sort it (also after all those miles I would have thought a driveshaft would be knocking)

if the weathers nice at the weekend i might have another look at the bushes

cheers for the ideas

Don't rule it out, lots of pattern wishbones are being sold with really poor quality bushes fitted. I had two from ECP that only lasted a couple of months each. Also from the symptoms (pulling right under load) I'd say the one that has failed is the passenger side front bush.

I did the same thing but the actual problem was that the socket (on the hub carrier) was so worn that it wasn't holding the wishbone ball-joint tight enough no matter how tight I did the bolt up, - replaced hub carrier and that solved it.

edit: agree with Jonah - I suspect nearside has the problem.

The shaft with out the greece in it will be turning slower than the fully lubricated one thus pulling the car to one side (some one correct me if i'm wrong). As to the not knocking, there still may be enough greece in there to prevent the knock of metel on metal just not enough to give the right amount of lubrication under movement.

I had this problem and it turned out to be the wishbone balljoints rather than the bushes. Jack the car up and give the wheel a good shake. Try to identify any play.

Ended up replacing both wishbones before it was sorted. Neat auto ones are meant to be quite good...
