Misfire Question

Recommended Posts

Guest davetibbs

Right, as I get near to finishing the 405 I need to get the engine running again.

It was running fine (and quick!) for about a year and a half, but then I hit a kerb when swerving to avoid someone pulling out of a road and after fixing the engine mount it started misfiring very badly, with all cylinders missing sparks.

Weeks later, after I'd resigned myself to just overhauling bodywork etc, I discovered the ground wire from the coilpack plug that connects to a capacitor was hanging on by a thread - I touched it and it fell off!

We connected it straight to ground but it still didn't work.

Now months later, I'm ready to get the engine running as bodywork is almost done. I've just ordered a new coilpack - are my hopes in vain? Could a dodgy earth wire to a coilpack cause this misfire?

that wire was to a suppressor designed to reduce ignition related noise. But won't affect coil pack performance.

My mates 2ltr turbo developed a missfire once up to temperature, generally in the midrange a slight hesitancy. Turned out to be the coil pack. So it might well be.

coilpack or maybe a dodgy TDC sensor.

Thanks for your replies.

A fault code reading suggested TDC sensor so I replaced it - to no avail. Coilpack is the only thing I can think of.

Is it common for coilpacks to fail?

Cheers, I'm pinning my hopes on it!

I have ordered a coilpack from EuroCarParts so will let people know what happens once I've got the engine wiring done. I've done it before so should be easy.

Didn't know there was one! Where's it happening?

I can pop across I'm sure, though it would be in the 406 TD :D
