Weird Running Problems

Recommended Posts

Guest jamesbeaman

hi there havent been here for a while...

ive just done a headgasket on my 1.9, i had the head skimmed and put new plugs in.Im now having lots of problems with the running of it since.

I have cleaned the air flow meter and the throttle housing with card cleaner.

I have also checked the S.A.D in accordance with the guid on the main site.

I have rechecked the spark plug gaps, and also had it on a emissions tester in the MOT garage and according to the mechanic there is no air leaks and it is fuellig orrectly...

now for my problem:)

when i start it, it ticks over at about 2000rpm and then all of a suden drops to about 800/850 rpm. If i take it out for a drive it has runs fine all the way up to the red line through all the gears untill to day when i was just driving round my town and every now and again it would feel like some one had turned the ignition off (looses power ) and the seems to pick up again. As soon as i come to a junction or traffic lights it cuts out. The only thing i can think of that i may ahve done wrong is put the two leads by the bak of the dizzy in the wrong order, but changeing them round doesnt seem to have made any difference. im sorry if you are reading this and thinking what the hell is this guy on......ie tried to explain as best i can.-_-

Thanks for reading and hope you have some idea as any wil be better than what i have.

sorry its so long and thanks....

james

Could be tachenmetric relay, under the dash the ecu, happened with mine fairly similar try unplugging it and plugging it back in a few times should cure it, if it doesn't you'll need to find another one. Not cheap from peugeot however should be able to find a one somewhere as they are fitted to loads of types of cars.

Otherwise could the the coil... this also went on one of mine and usually only played up when it was cold.

good luck

its beside the steering column, if you put your hand in the drivers side glove box tray thingy and feel around above that you should find a rectangular black box with some white writing on it thats the tachemetric relay.

good luck

Its right next to the ecu and shares the same fixing as one of the ecu bolts.

does any body reckon this will be part of my problem or a sepetate one? wehn i am driving normally (more and more this is happening) it keeps dying on me , as if sum 1 has turned the ignition off, i have messed with the tachemetric thingy by the ecu(discontect reconect a couple of time). this is really getting a pain now as i cant drive the car and i refuse to pay a garage £45 per hour to look at it for me.......

any help would be great thx alot

I know this probally sounds to simple, but is is anything to do with the idle control screw on the throttle body..i know i had to adjust mine in the winter months to keep it ticking over nicely..just a suggestion

also check the signal wire that comes out of the distributor housing , its the signal wire to the ign amp and tach relay ect , take out the screw that holds it onto the distributor body and pull it straight off . check the condition of the terminals either end and if you're handy with a multimeter check the continuity while wriggling the cable around . or better still with the engine running have a wriggle around with it (and the connector at the other end. and see if the engine cuts out , also the ignition amp and coil terminals

if youre engine cuts when you're giving it laldy and it backfires when you get a spark again then its more likely to be the coil . if it doesnt backfire then the fuel must also be getting cut off , then i'de be looking at the above mentioned terminals, the tach relay then the fuel pump etc.

ive taken the wire off and checked the continuity and its perfect, ive also run it and wiggled al wires i can get to. i am loosing my paticence now and cant think of what it is. it isnt back fireing when it cuts out it just cuts and the goes again. would the tach problem be related to the idle as well? cause i cant get it to idle, it will idel at 2000rpm for a while then drop to 800rpm and up again and then cut out. or if i start it and blip the throttl it cuts imideatly.......

thx for your help ppl

This seounds like exact same problem as i had and it to fix i adjusted the idle control screw and it fixed it..did you try that, its on the throttle body,if you follow the curvature of the plenum(inlet) chamber on the right side as your facing the engine the screw is located round the back slightly of the T/B.

hope this helps :(
