Guest MAMS Posted December 28, 2005 not sure if this is the right forum but... Looks like i'm Car-less again for a bit. My pile of p15h Peugeot 205 Auto has run into a bit of bother. Seems that you're supposed to keep the Transmission Fluid topped up (helps if someone says that like - remember I've only been driving for 2 months) and my car broke down. Mr RAC got me running and home with a top-up of Transmission Fluid, and now it looks like i'll need to replace the Torque Converter. Problem is over revving or gear slipping where the car is revving it's head off getting to 30mph then calms down, but trying to accelerate to overtake etc does the same. Now been told by a couple of Auto specialists that no way is it a torque converter and that if it was the car wouldn't go anywhere, either forward or reverse. After some advice, i'm having the gearbox emptied of fluid and given a quick clean and the leads etc checked out before refillign with fresh fluid, the stuff that's in there just now, looks kinda brown rather than the pinky red that it does when it goes in. I'm tempted to scrap the fecking thing but I'e spent a wee bit getting it road worthy and I really like my wee car, whilst I potter about and get used to driving. Anyone got some spare violins? Or any advice?
Anthony 1,003 Posted December 28, 2005 Don't know much about Pug autobox's I'm afraid, but I know when a colleague at work's Rover auto did a similar thing to what you mention (turning fluid dark very quickly, not changing up correctly) it was the actual autobox that was knackered on it
Guest MAMS Posted December 28, 2005 That's what worries me and also what one Auto Specialist has said, they said it's likely the box needs replaced, the other said Gear Train or something.
Foltan 0 Posted December 28, 2005 If you scrap it ill buy the bonnet off you, if its got a bulge running down it!
Guest MAMS Posted December 28, 2005 LOL I'll bear that in mind, depends on whether the fluid change and clean works and / or the price of a replacement gearbox. if I do scrap it then there will be some bits going spare
vikgti 0 Posted December 28, 2005 You should be able to get the box pressure tested as a auto box works on relief valves and pressure build up in order for the drive to be transmitted. If your level is low then this to would contribute to loss of drive, but you also have to ask if the fluid is being lost where is it going? I would refil the system and get it pressure tested and go from there.
Guest MAMS Posted December 28, 2005 Thanks Vikgti I'll give that a go
newdean0 0 Posted December 30, 2005 (edited) I used to have a BX auto and from what I remember there are some adjusters at the back of the box (exhaust manifold side) that enable you to adjust the tension of the brake bands inside the box. I don't know how you adjust them but an auto box specialist might be able to tell you. If it's only slipping on one gear it's likely to be a band that needs adjusting. Driving with a slipping gear will generate a load of heat in the box and turn your fluid brown and burnt pretty quickly. P.S. D-9 on this forum might have a low(ish) mileage auto-box lying around from his MI16 conversion. If the box is knackered give him a PM. Guest MAMS Posted January 1, 2006 If you scrap it ill buy the bonnet off you, if its got a bulge running down it! It does have the 'bulge' on the bonnet but i'm not looking to scrap it just yet Looks like it's the gearbox that's away, were going to try changing the gearbox filter and fluid then if all else fails a replacement auto box. so if anyone has a working automatic gearbox for a 1600cc peugeot
d-9 0 Posted January 2, 2006 Well mine was working quite happily when i took it out of the car about 3 months back, thou its been dumped in the corner of my drive ever since! As ive said, its yours if you want it, but transport is an issue what with scotland being a long way from gloucester and auto boxes are damn heavy.
pug309twin40s 1 Posted January 2, 2006 if the fluid is brown and manky then the gearbox or clutch is knackered. thats what i was told by a couple different people when i was finding out about changing the fluid in the autobox on the granada cosworth
Guest MAMS Posted January 2, 2006 Well mine was working quite happily when i took it out of the car about 3 months back, thou its been dumped in the corner of my drive ever since! As ive said, its yours if you want it, but transport is an issue what with scotland being a long way from gloucester and auto boxes are damn heavy. I might take you up on that!! Just waiting for it to be checked over, closed with the holidays and stuff, but if it's a near gearbox I need I'll give you a shout, a wee trip to Gloucester wouldn't be too bad if the fluid is brown and manky then the gearbox or clutch is knackered. thats what i was told by a couple different people when i was finding out about changing the fluid in the autobox on the granada cosworth The fluid looked brown, but recently when tested still looked the "pink" colour, so maybe was old fluid still kicking about in it or something. Mechanic is going to take the sump off the gearbox and check the filter, been told it might just be a clogged transmission filter on the gearbox, and that if it was just metal shavings there then it's fine, if it's lumps of metal then a new gearbox is necessary. will hopefully find out in the next week. At the moment though I'm car-less and with only having my licence for 3 months no-one will rent a car to me and my mechanic, who has cars sitting, can't either as they're all manual and I can only drive an auto Oh I hate this time of year. d-9 0 Posted January 2, 2006 Do you have a reson to drive autos only, coz after 6months with an 309 gti auto I would strongly recommend driving a manual if possible!
Guest MAMS Posted January 2, 2006 Only got an Auto licence, got serious problems with my left achilles means that driving was impossible dut to the pain everytime I needed to use the clutch.
Guest MAMS Posted January 3, 2006 Yup, totally, get a lot of pain just walking nowadays too, depends on how tired I am etc.
Guest MAMS Posted January 7, 2006 Looks like the car will be going to the scrap heap, gearbox is fecked and tbh not really worth replacing. Here's a pic of the bonnet, I might be open to offers for it before I scrap it.
Foltan 0 Posted January 8, 2006 (edited) Ooh! i think i had first dibs!! Depends on how much though! And does it have any dents in it, because bonnets can be a bit of a arse to tidy up! edit: oh and ive just realised that you live in scotland, so youd have to be able to post it!
