The belt cover was made by a mate who can tig weld. Then Alex filed off his welds and polished the whole thing up.

Just curious,,, Are your butterflys completely round? If so how do they seal when on 0% or have you put in some clearance between the body and the choke?

 

Secondly what sort of bearings are you running the spindles on?

The prototype butterfly was round, however the production ones are to close at 8degrees and so are elliptical, which is a bit more conventional.

 

The spindles will run in either whitemetal or bronze bearings, depending on which is easier to make.

Bloody hell!

 

It's been a while!

 

Right, to get things back on track, I've redesigned the butterflies as they were taking literally an AGE to make and it was unbelievably easy to cock-up hours and hours worth of work.

 

Anyway, here's the result:

 

Not quite as pretty as the original design, but about a million times easier to make with the equipment I currently have available.

 

So, what do we think? Less restrictive than normal butterfly/spindle assemblies?

 

Actually just had a thought that the butterfly could be silver soldered into the spindle halves which could be profiled down a bit, thus losing the bolts again

Well to be honest I like the first idea.

 

But like You said...this ones seems much easier to make...

I prefer the first design too, and whilst they are possible to make, it's mountains of work which can easily go boobs up.

 

If I ever get a milling machine (and turn-table), I'll make them as per the first design!

Thats easy to say, but believe me you'd trash that idea after making the first one (after taking 4 hours!)

I did do one and it fitted perfectly. However, it also took 8 boring hours to make! I promptly ballsed up the next one

 

I'm actually quite liking the fabricated idea, tis a bit of a compromise, but must be better than having the spindle run full width!

issue with not having the spindle full width is there's too much scope for misalignment. Given the consequences of having them stuck open, i'd be wary of using your design.

Did have a thought about that actually:

 

When I machine the spindles, I do them between centres so that if I need to take them off the lathe for some reason, they'll be pretty spot bollock concentric when I put them back.

 

Now if I leave the spindles a little oversized prior to assembly with the butterfly, I can stick the completed assembly back in between the centres and bring them down to the 8mm dia, and perfectly concentric too

Bit of a fuel leak through the rail though - so the car's in the garage until it's sorted

That's a bit out of date now as the connection between the fuel rails was revised to look shinier, and now those rails are going on the shelf to be replaced by a stainless steel rail that hopefully won't bloody leak!

They look excellent, there is a LOT of room for trumpets and filters.

Trumpets are now enclosed in Jon Murgies old airbox with a big fat K&N filter.
