High Ratio Steering

Recommended Posts

Guest Bigj

Tried to buy a high ratio steering rack but nobody had any in stock

So I ordered a rack kit and am fitting it myself.

I've managed to get the track rods disconnected from the rack and now I need to remove the pinion. I've removed the circlip but I can't get the pinion to budge.

Anyone have any ides as to how to do this ? and also where can I get a new pinion bearing ?

Can't find it listed in the parts catalouge anywhere

Frustrated!!!!!

I can't help with the fitting kit, but where did you get it from and how much was it?

The pinion bearing will most likely have numbers that an engineering places could go off I bet.

Its a TAS kit and was £84.50 I think +vat and postage

I've given up with it for tonight

I'll have another go tommorrow

I think its just being stubborn, I'll try heating the casing a bit, that should release it

HURRAH !!!!!

I managed to get it apart in the end

Next time it won't be a problem but.................

If you plan to fit a quick rack kit you will need to replace the bearing on the pinion gear as it is held in place with a pressed collar and would be a real fu**ker to get off.

Should be able to get the bearing for a bearing dealer as it has an SKF part number on it.

If you need any help let me know

what does the "kit" include?

can you convert the power steering rack to 2.5 (?) turns (and keep the power steering)?

The Kit includes the Pinion and the rack

Not sure if it fits the power rack

I'll PM you the company details.

Incidently assuming that your profile is correct and you'e in Bosnia, I'll be in Serbia and Montenegro 2nd week in May so I could bring small parts out to you if you want.

Surely it's not worth changing a PAS rack anyway as it's almost a similar ratio isn't it??

Pas is 3.2, Tas quick rack is 2.7

Half a turn quicker.. Probably noticable difference.

Ah, I thought it was something like 2.7 vs 2.5
