Turbos....

How long do we think that a turbocharger should last on a TT engine?

Mine has done 67000 miles, and as the engine has to come out anyway, I was wondering if it would be worth replacing the turbo.

I suppose that if there is no exhaust smoke (fron the turbo), there is enough boost pressure, and no mechanical noise, then it should be ok, shouldn't it?

Are there any other signs that point to a knackered turbo?

Thanks,

Simon

This is a quote from the TT website:

How long does a turbo last ?

On average, about 75,000 miles with regular engine servicing and good quality engine oil.

I think that is conservative as turbocharged cars now seem to last much longer than that!

Those figures seem about right, so you'd probably get about another year out of it depending on driving style. Just don't try linking an Anti-lag system up. I spoke to someone the other week and they got 15mins of life from a turbo with full antilag switched on :D

That said, I think I have history for mine that shows the turbo lasted for over 120k....unless the previous owner replaced it and didn't keep a receipt (which I doubt!)

While the engine is out could you not get a set of oil seals and 360 degree thrust bearing installed? Would probably be cheaper to do it now then pay for a recon one when it blows up.

Thanks for that, lads.

I suppose that it's just about the mileage where it MIGHT be worth changing the turbo.

I have just acquired the car, so I don't know how the previous owners treated it.

Like you say, the oil changes would be critical.

I might send it in to Turbo Technics for a re-con, oil seals, 360 bearing as suggested, I just don't fancy £500 odd for a new one!

What failure signs should I look out for?

Simon

If there is ANY end float at all in the shaft it needs rebuilding.
