This is on my list of things to do eventually.

You will need a long positive lead and a short earth lead. the battery has to be secure so needs to be at the very least strapped down, preferable mounted inside a battery box. Run the long positive wire through the car to the engine bay, and earth the battery to the chassis in the footwell.

run the positive lead through a fused cut-off switch as well.

I really like the look of that install! What do you mean by a cut-off switch? Excuse my stupidity....

Cut off switch or battery isolater are just a big switch in the main power feed form battery so all power can be cut easily in a fire or accident etc, compulsory in most of motorsport

Oh ok, yes I knew that actually, just not sure why cybernck suggested one - a standard roadgoing car doesn't need one. Is he saying a fire is more likely with the battery located where he's put it, or just that the consequences would be worse?

Yep, am now the proud owner of 9 points and a pending SP30. i thought the pending SP30 would already count and I'd get banned, but it turns out it doesn't. Not sure what will happen now because I've sent off the fixed penalty for the SP30, which I wouldn't have been able to do if I'd had 9 points at the time. Is it possible these ships will pass each other in the night and I'll get a licence back with 12 points on it but no ban due to no one noticing? Or will I get an instant ban, notified to me in the post in a few days? Or will I have to go to court again? if so will it be in a week or 6 months? Who knows........

Insured the car on Friday for a bargainous £648 (all mods and points declared!) with HIC.

Getting tax tomorrow, and then I'll be fully above board :o

Plus the switch could also be used as an extra immobiliser.

Granted you wont have any power going to te alarm but that's beside the point B) .
