Clicking sound when trying to start Peugeot 205GTI 1.6

Hi there,

Having an issue with my Peugeot 205GTI 1.6 for the last six months. It starts perfectly one try and then every now and then nothing happens. It just clicks when you go to start the car.  I posted on here awhile ago and was told to change the seven pin Brown plug under the air intake which I have done. I’ve hardwired all the connections so the plug has now gone completely. I have changed the battery. I have added ground points. I have changed the starter motor.

What would be the next option to try/change?

I also noticed the other day I had a lot of water in the passenger side rear seat foot well. How would that be getting in? I guess it must be something to do with the sunroof?

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help!

Oscar

The water will probably be getting in past the 1/4 window seal , on mine the rubber and the backing had separated where they are glued but they tend to shrink anyway with age . The next thing I would change would be the ignition barrel and wiring  as these tend to give bother too . The barrel and the wire need to be a pair or genuine as these will all be the same ,   the repro ones the shape often is different  , genuine ones had a "y" shape where the barrel meets the wire plug, you will know what I mean when you see the wire of the barrel.

Hi there,

Thank you for your answer answers. I will look into those. Do you feel the ignition coil could be worth changing also? The car last time I drove it also seem to run a bit funny where if the rev dropped it would cut out.

Its not spinning over so the coil won't be holding it back , the starter relay is not getting enough power to bring in the starter and spin the engine over . Was the starter new ? it could be worn brushes in the starter but as its doing the same as before it may not be the starter but the wiring to it which goes all the way back to the ignition switch , the 7 pin plug is a usual cause but you have sorted that . Its tricky to reach from underneath  but if you put 12v to the spade connector wire on the solenoid from the battery positive and it spins over the starter is ok , It MUST be out of gear/handbrake on  or you will get run over so be careful . It doesn't have to be a heavy wire as that spade is fed from the 7 pin plug . You must touch the spade connector only not the main starter lead , I connected a little crocodile clip to the spade and once it was secured ok touched the other end to the positive battery post.

Hi Lesley,

Firstly, thank you so much again for your help. Okay understood about coil. I went out there this morning to try and start it again. It seems like there is also a noise coming from the glovebox when you turn the key you hear a clicking noise in the glove box. Starter motor was brand-new when I did eventually get it to start this morning to me it’s not the starter as you can quite clearly hear the solenoid pin click and start a fires up straight away very well. I guess it could be a faulty part but was bought brand-new.

Is there any sort of relay or part in the glove box that it could be?

Would you care to check the link below to see if that is the correct ignition barrel? I will need?

Thank you very much

Oscar

That should be fine , it only if you were trying to use the wiring of that on your barrel there could be a problem as the part that electrical contact changed in shape later on  , it will be the barrel where the problem is rather than the wiring as it's worn.you can just plug it in to try it rather than the hassle of fitting it just to see. Thee are other things it could be but this will be the easiest and cheapest to try and is what I would do but I'm no expert.

You can see the y shape here with the barrel split from the wiring , you don't need to fo this as you will buy the complete part.
