Exhaust for 1993 Gentry 1.9.

I have searched this forum and elsewhere including the discussion on here entitled “Exhaust Systems”  Started by shalmaneser, in 2009. but I haven’t managed to clarify the situation re catalytic converter models.
My situation is that the middle section of my exhaust at the box junction has a leak  currently resolved with Gungum paste. Because its a1993 car I shouldn’t and do not want to, remove the Cat
I believe the system on cat fitted cars is

1. A down pipe with cat included (I have a new one of these, in mild steel as you can’t seem to get stainless ones? waiting to be fitted)

2. A middle section with box which I can’t seem to buy at a sensible price even if it was actually available as opposed to just being listed and

3. A back box section of exhaust.

Obviously the front down pipe with cat cant be the same as non cat 1.9 cars but are the non cat exhaust back and middle box sections the same as cat ones? as these also seem to be available in stainless? ( I measured all the pipes as 2 inch diameter not 2 1/2 inch)
Thank you

Bremar

The non cat 1.9 system I bought goes right to the back box so wont share any part with yoirs except maybe the back box.

Have you thought about just getting a custom made stainless from the cat back, lifetime guarantee and shouldn't need to ever replace again ?

Custom made. No,  that, stupidity never occurred to me. Or at least get a price. I could just remove the whole thing past the cat as you said and take it in somewhere. That one i will certainly investigate

Custom exhausts will be made on the car, so you need to take the car to someone for that approach.

The change from 3 part to two part in 1990 coincided with a small increase in bore size as well as from sleeve to olive type joints, so its only the rear part of the non cat system which is the same.

Hi welshpug,

Mine are indeed the olive type joints.
it appears

1. early cars had a 3 section exhaust with sleeve joints

2. later cars without a cat had a 2 piece system with olive joints

3. later cat fitted cars had a 3 piece system (downpipe with cat, middle box and back box) with olive joints.

There is very little reference to cat fitted cars on the forum.

Does this make the middle section unique to cat fitted cars. And is maybe the back box section the same on all later Gti 1.9 cars with either 2 part olive jointed exhausts or the 3 part cat fitted cars with same olive joints?
thanks Bremar

Out of interest I contacted MIJ custom exhaust centre in Walsall. This is there quote for the mid and rear sections from the cat back.

The cat-back stainless steel exhaust system (mid & rear section) you have requested for your Peugeot 205 GTi will cost £294.99, which is fully inclusive of VAT & fitting. I have included a round tailpipe in the quotation.  Should you wish you can choose an alternative or upgrade from our extensive range of tailpipes, which you can view on the day of fitting.  We carry all the necessary parts needed to build your exhaust system.

We do require your vehicle at our premises in Walsall WS2 9EX, West Midlands in order to manufacture & fit the system.  As a guide it should take no longer than 2 - 3 hours to build & fit the system to your vehicle.

Having a custom built exhaust system from MIJ has its benefits.  You can tell us how you would like the new exhaust to sound, which can be fabricated to sound from quiet to full sport. Our most popular choice is a mid-sport setup as this gives the best of both worlds, non-intrusive but achieves a sporty tone upon applying the throttle.  All our systems are free-flowing which can increase the performance and efficiency of your car.  We also offer a lifetime guarantee with all our custom built exhaust systems giving you added peace of mind.

If you do have any further queries with the details I've provided or you would like to go ahead and make a booking, please call me on 01922 645 646 or reply back by email.

I had MIJ do my exhaust on my 92 CTI with a CAT. When they refer to sound options its either standard which is mid and back box, Sport without a mid box and race which is no box. I went with Sport which was fine when it was the 1.9 engine but since the GTI6 engine being put in it is louder, some might say loud.

Sport is also boomey doing 70 on a motorway, i don't do much motorway mileage so not an issue for me, now that i am getting on (in age) i am now considering going back to a standard sound.

I was all round pleased with MIJ but make sure you book it in and get an early time ! i travelled all the way from essex, got told at 2pm due to them running behind could i come back next weekend ? to which i politely said NO ! I think it was gone 5 by the time they finished it.

I knew very little about mods back then especially with the 205's, i went with MIJ primarily as were much cheaper then anywhere else, if i went down that route again i prob would look at someone more recognized like milltek as performance for me would be more important then price but not so much to i would ever consider a tolman exhaust.

I think mine cost me £250 8-9 years ago !

Thank you Leslie and Spenny for the advise. I think I’ll be paying a visit to MIJ in the new year. I will go with a quiet exhaust as its the Gentry model and and Road Tally stuff is of the classic reliability type. Just need to fit the new mild steel downpipe/cat that I already have to the existing exhaust before going to  MIJ, finish  fitting my Brantz trip meter and rear wheel sensor and finally finish spray painting (with rattle cans) the bonnet and roof of my car.
thanks again

Bremar.
