Hi all,

my 205 mi16 has had new head gasket, head skim, timing belt , starter motor , fuel pump , injectors recon, fuel tank clean  & service. It started once all the work was done and now it’s cranking but starting. My mechanic can’t understand what’s gone wrong. Please can someone around North west side close to Manchester please habe a look and sort it. It’s been a long six months since.

Ask your mechanic what's missing, has it got a spark, has he purged the fuel lines since rebuilding everything?

Is it on the standard ecu? If so, which one, two or three row?

Yes to all. And it’s got a standard ecu

If it has fuel and spark and turns over it should run.

So it either hasn't got enough fuel, no spark, or turning too slow.

if it has indeed got enough fuel & a strong spark, is it in the right firing order?

I don’t know much about motor mechanics, but I’m sure my mechanic checked everything.
I need someone willing to have a look and get it going for me.if someone can help me out would really appreciate it. Obviously not for free would pay.
cheers

Hi ,

Ive managed to get it started but it’s idling @ 3k revs. And the choke light is on. As far I know there isn’t a choke on it. What could it be a bad connection somewhere?

Choke light is a fairly easy one, there is an unused wire on a GTI, near where the choke lever would be on a carb car, the wire on a GTI is just floating about and should not be connected, someone thinking its an earth (its green wire with a yellow spade connector housing I think) has plugged it into an earthing point on the steering column thinking they are doing the right thing as an educated guess. Unplug it and that is that one sorted out.

Idle at 3k revs can be one of many things, Air leaks after the throttle body, throttle body bushes worn out (common now on the Mi16 throttles, they are all 35/40 odd years old after all) idle valve not working, throttle position switch not adjusted correctly, throttle cable too tight, are a few to start with.
