Help identifying brown connector

Recommended Posts

huggys-customs

I've just put my 1986 205 gti back together after taking the engine out during lockdown.

I can't see where this plug connects to.

Can anyone help? It's below the coil and distributor.

Its only 2 pin but has 3 wires in it.

I've looked through the forum and can't see anything similar in all the pics from others in similar situations.

I'm having trouble getting it to idle properly, so hoping this is the cause. It starts and idles at 2.5k, if I blip the throttle it tries to idle around 900rpm and stalls. I've checked timing and tried to set the tps and idle screw. Then I found this connector.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is that the silver thing mounted on the top of the strut tower? If so mine seems connected already. I think, I'll get a pic when I get home.

Thanks

No that's for the dim dip lighting, but looks very similar.

Thanks. I'll have to source a resistor, I didn't take one off and bought the car as a barn find, so never had it running properly before stripping it down a few years ago.

I still have a idle issue, I'll start a new thread to keep it simple.

Thanks for your help.

I was tidying up some wires and had a poke around with the wires on the plug identified as the cooling fan resistor. They go to the ignition coil.

Blue wire goes to the coil positive and also joins the brown wire terminal 3 on ignition amp.

Grey and cream wire on the other side go to the coil negative and pin 1 on ignition amp.

Is it definitely a cooling fan resistor plug before I try and source one?

Thanks

What are the wire numbers?

If they go the the coil and it otherwise runs then leave it alone, it's not going to be the fan resistor wiring.

Blue one says 2a

Cream one possibly says 3

It runs, but badly. Idle is ok, but stutters above 2k, sometimes revs through if you poke the throttle a few times, but won't really rev under load.

I'm ordering a new rotor arm and dizzy cap. They look fine but are old. I'm considering ordering a new coil and ignition amp to eliminate those too.

It's got new leads and plugs and injectors have been cleaned.
