Hi all   Just got got  my 1.6 gti after a gap of 30 years. Car in good all round  condition   had full service  with pug1off last year. Thing I'm  not happy with is idles 1200rpm when cold  but once warm goes up to 1500rpm.  Also it's quite  jerky when driving.

It sounds like a combination of possibly the SAD (idle valve) not working properly and/or general set up. Your problem these days is finding someone who knows how to set it up, its not that difficult, but most garages these days aren't interested if they can't plug in a fault code reader.

To help diagnose when its idling at 1500rpm and fully warmed up locate the hose going from the rubber elbow near the throttle body back to the idle valve and clamp it closed with a pair of grips. If the idle speed then drops right down the idle valve not closing is your issue.

These cars were always reviewed as a bit jerky even when new, as modern cars have improved the perception of how jerky they are has probably got worse. See how it is once set up properly, but it may be that you just have to get used to it.

I was going to suggest faulty and/or incorrectly adjusted TPS.

Thx will look into this before  it goes in garage  for the winter.  Are there any garages around  the west  Midlands  that know how to set this engine up.
