Removing the lower ball joint

Recommended Posts

Richie-Van-GTi

Has anyone successfully removed the lower ball joint from their wishbone without knackering the arm? I have some brand new delphi arms, the correct shape ones and I would like to get the ball joints out if possible.

Looking into making an insert to accept downward facing ball joints (406 style)

Years ago we pressed one out, then milled the casting to take a 106 ball joint. Alot of effort and time for what it was worth.

I have seen them modified to accept a spherical bearing,  aftermarket castings are better for this as they have more meat.

Stumbled across this thread and ended up searching the forum for some pictures / part number of a possible replacement ball joint.

Unfortunately what comes closest was this thread from 2013:

As I saw, @cybernck was able to only change the ball joint. Is there any part number / dimensions on this replacement?

Have a lot of old wishbones here and I don't want to buy chinese junk if there is way to replace the joint only.

There's no "replacement" ball joint for 205/309 Gti wishbones .

You need machinist for ball joint reconditioning , they usually reuse the ball (if good no rust/pitting) and just make another PTFE plastic cup (the part which wears) new dust boot , add some grease and grease nipple and close up the joint (there's a few ways around doing that , no welding needed)

We have here one good old machinist who does them for us when needed .

You could cut open a 106 bal joint to use the internals but it may not be a 100% match depending of the make.
