1st and 2nd gear crunch…

Recommended Posts

Greengti1

Hi

i have a 205 gti with the reverse next to first gear, I think it’s the older type.

i think along the line it’s had a short shift kit fitted.  I have looked and it does not have any lose ball joints or anything…

the problem is unless I am really precise with the gear stick it crunches into 1st and 2nd.

it feels like the stick is being allowed to be pushed too far to the left which makes the crunch… it feels like it should have a stopper / shim or something to stop it.

I have been searching and found one reference by Miles to a clip that might need replacing for this kind of issue … only he did not say what clip or where…

any help / thought would be really appreciated.

thanks Adam

It's nothing to do with the position of the gear stick as such,  it'll either be a synchro spring clip or tired synchro cones, i.e stuff inside the gearbox.

thanks very much for responding.

So from the sounds of it there is nothing I can adjust or replace with the gearbox on the car.  It’s a gearbox internals issue so probably a change of box required ☹️

that’s annoying……

any other thoughts appreciated….

No adjustments no, better off having yours refreshed, you never know how good a potentially almost 40 year old gearbox will be.
