Door lock options?

Recommended Posts

Driver's door lock key has broken inside the cylinder, so I need to fit a new cylinder kit (I'm planning to change both driver and passenger side door lock barrels).

A local locksmith says they are able to re-key the new cylinders to fit the spare ignition key.

The only plase I've been able to find cylinder kits is AutoDoc - with prices ranging from £10 (BLIC) to about £40 (Valeo). Looking at the pictures, the different products appear physically identical BUT I want to avoid wasting time & money on a cheap and nasty kit or something that the locksmith can't re-key.

thoughts?

Valeo I think were OE, I've never heard of BLIC.

I'd buy the Valeo.

So out of curiosity I ordered them both!

Sequence of the keys, top to bottom is:

1. original Peugeot

2. Valeo

3. BLIC (note that there is no slot at the tip of the key)

The BLIC box label is in Polish, English, and German.

The BLIC cylinder is a pretty good clone, though movement of the key into the cylinder is not as smooth as the Valeo and it's unlikely the a locksmith can change the lock to accept the original key. I'm not totally sure this is possible with the Valeo cylinder either...

Even Valeo cylinders aren't supposed to be rekeyed nor taken apart. Usually you grind the crimpled tab then use epoxy for reassembly but maybe a locksmith has a better method.

Does the original key fit inside the new locks? The new keys are cut with another tool but pin spacing looks similar.

Here are the specs of the original "NE72" key if you want to check :

Yes, the original kits fits both Valeo and BLIC locks.

I think the table of key specs explains the difference; the BLIC key could be an NE23? (and possibly used on really early 205s pre-1985?)

I'm not totally sold on rekeying the Valeo cylinders; would not want to do it if risking future failures.

There is extra machining on NE23 blank keys so it's more likely that BLIC just simplified the NE72 design to cut costs.

Those keys shouldn't work on ignition barrels but as long as BLIC only sells door locks it's not a problem for them.

Looking at the cuts on the new keys you may not be able to directly reuse the key pins if the ends are too flat. Also the BLIC key has shallow cuts to shorten machining time and limit tool wear, it saves them money but that also means it's easyer to pick the lock open.
