Mi16 information resource

Recommended Posts

I am about to start buying , building and fitting an Mi16 into my 309 for the first time , there is lots of information in these pages but it would take a lifetime to read them all , is there a single source of information on here or elsewhere that would be helpful for tech specs , model changes through the years , helpful hints , part numbers , a rundown on the types of Bosch management , shared parts with XU9JA and so on . I will be working on an internally standard 1905cc ali block XU9J4 , possibly on standard Motronic and possibly aftermarket ECU but not throttle bodies . Thanks .

I'm not sure if you can find a thread on this forum but PeterT did a good job here:

http://www.taylor-eng.com/

About the timing "XU9J4 early" and XU9J4Z have the same part numbers for the camshafts, that's not the case for "XU9J4 late".

The 2 row ECU for "XU9J4 early" is BOSCH 0 261 200 125 and the one for "XU9J4 late" is BOSCH 0 261 200 139.

The switch from early to late correspond with the launch of the 405 Mi16x4 for MY90 and the switch to 3 row ML1.3 for the XU9J4 correspond to MY91.

2 row ECUs need 98 octane but the 3 row with knock sensor can do with 95 octane.

Not everyone knows about the cams/pulleys/ECUs so you can find engines with mismatched parts.

About the wet sump oil control even the baffled sump from the 309 GTI16 wasn't enough, Peugeot later made a last try with a special oil pump just for the GTI16 but little to nothing is know about it.

About the swap on a 309 you can look at what Peugeot did with the 309 GTI16, unlike with a 205 there is just enough room on the front to fit the engine. A GTI/Diesel radiator with diesel twin fans will do and you can buy the top radiator hose that also goes to the oil cooler.

All the ECU and cam pulley combinations are on my website. There was also a 0 261 200 119.

I still sell upgrade chips for all. I can't recall which ML4.1 version doesn't take the 7400 RPM upgrade however. All the 3 row versions take my 7500 upgrade. Both 2 and 3 row upgrade versions have otherwise identical fuel and ignition maps.

I have a pair of Mi16x4 camshafts. They're identical Mi16.

I'm happy to answer questions but I'm not marking parts any more.

Many thanks for the information , i have bought an Mi16 head in what looks like decent condition and a complete engine / gearbox lifted out of a 405 and not been split till now , thats come apart ok with no issues as yet with the headbolts or threads in the block . Looking forward to stripping it right down and checking everything over  this winter , i have got some light corrosion on the cam pulleys so i will see whats best for tidying those up - vapour blasting maybe .
