XU10J2TE and camshaft swap

Recommended Posts

My 205 CTI has the XU10J2TE; the mid 90s 2.0 liter 8 valve turbo engine. The head has been redone. It works absolutely fine and I'm happy with it. It is just a fast cruiser, I do not use it on the track or anything like that. Having said that:

A friend is breaking an early 306 convertible with a 2.0 8V. He wants to get rid of it and the engine is still there. Now I heard that the camshaft of the NA 2.0 8V would be a direct swap into my 2.0 8V turbo, as it's basically the same engine. It would give me more power in the higher rev ranges if I'm not mistaken. I however am a novice wrencher. The biggest project I did myself was swapping the alternator in my 406, just to give you an idea. I can (and will) ask for help for this camswap from the mechanic friend who did most of my engine swap if I were to do it though. He however is not a Peugeot guy, so most of the questions I ask below are things he can't answer.

I have tried to find more information, but what I found was limited. I mostly found that it was a possibility, period.

So to my questions:

  • How straight forward is de swap other than the swap itself? Does it need changes to the ECU or anything else involved?
  • How much will this swap bring? More torque, more power, how much more power? I understand no one can give an exact number, but I'd be interested in a rough estimate of the change in engine character.
  • Do I need to re-use bearing caps, followers and so on from the NA engine or from my turbo engine?
  • Will it affect reliability? What is the risk?
  • Anything else you'd take from the donor 306?

I hope someone can help.

Do a search. The differences between the various camshafts where well researched and covered in this Section. From memory, the DKZ cam is best, unless you fork out the dollars for a Catcams Turbo cam. Yes, you need to get the followers/buckets as well, unless you can dress your old ones satisfactorily. Better still, buy new ones. New cam on old buckets is a recipe for disaster.

Found it, it would seem the XU10J2 cam was the answer.

There is more than one XU10J2 cam. In France at least it's the early non cat XU10J2 cam that is sought after, those R6A 130hp engines can be found on some 605 and XM but not on all markets.

The most common XU10J2 cam (with cat) was also used on the XU102C (carb) and D6D XU9J2 (MP3.1 ECU).
