Relays and wiring woes

Recommended Posts

Morning people, my memory has faded a lot since I swapped my engine for a GTI6 and I’m struggling with starter feed.

can anyone help with what these relay boxes are for?

I can get it to crank if I send a signal to the starter from the battery but not from the key so I’m just chasing stuff down

None of those are engine related, the gti6 double relay is on the back of the ecu box.

Typically there isnt a relay for the starter unless someone has added one in, the gti6 looms dont tend to give issues on the starter circuit like the 205's did.

Yeah, thought as much. I’m getting 12v at the brown plugs when I turn the key, but nothing at the starter. I can start it by spiking live to the solenoid. I assume it’s crappy wiring somewhere in the loom?

Another question.

Will a 1.9 GTi Alternator and Starter fit a GTI-6 Engine?

Thanks again

no on both counts, unless the gti6 has had the early S16 non ac bracket fitted.

Thanks @welshpug - always a font of top notch info!

now, do you happen to know the part number for my alternator? I’m trying to replace it on the cheap (because I’m a tight fisted northern sod)

Are you sure on the starter Mei? I swapped my 4rs racecar starter onto my 8v gti when it failed without issue. Or is it the large body 8v gti starter wont go under the larger plenum?
