Cam belt tensioner stud cross threaded

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

The car is a 1.6 GTi that had not moved for a long time.

In preparation for getting in running again we're doing the belts as part of the long list of things to do. The tensioner is the spring type.

After some good progress the tensioner bolts were fun. The top of the two bolts has cross threaded the stud. The nut is also ruined and will need a new one.

A couple of questions.

1. What is the thread on the studs, it's not m6 or m8, is it m7?

2. Can you get replacement studs? If anyone has a link to them that would be gratefully received.

3. The engine mount is right in the way to get the tap and die set on to try and  re-cut it in situ. Can you get this off with the engine in situ? It doesn't look like there is enough space to do this.

Some pictures of the fun attached.

Thanks,

Yes you can take them off .

The suds aren't as tight fit , you can usually undo them with locking pliers .. however if they seem tight , heat up the stud with blowtorch and try again should come loose eventually (there's no threadlock on the ends/insides) .

Then once removed run a die across the threads and see if it cleans up .. from the looks of it think it'll be fine as it's mangled only on a few initial threads .

They're 7x100 mm studs (7x100-37.5-14-20) , should be able to find replacement ones in ordinary DIY/nut-and-bolt shop .

D,

Thanks for the info.

Next step then to remove the offending stud. Given how the rest has gone, I'm sure it will be fun.

Thanks for confirming m7.
