1.6 GTi engine - head off - liner damage ?

Hi,

 

I purchased a 1.6 in May, with a misfire. Turns out the head gasket was on the way out.

 

I removed the head yesterday to inspect the damage.

 

2 of the liners are fine.

 

However the liners in 3 and 2 have some discolouration. Links to pics below.

Replace all 4 liners and piston rings I would suggest.

 

Looks like it has been sat with water in there.

There was a bit in there yes, so probably since i parked it up in May.

 

I was under the impression that the wet liners couldnt be replaced as they never seated correcly again ?

 

Am i wrong ?

They can be replaced just fine, on the proviso that:

 

  • The liner seats in the block are in good condition and haven't suffered excessive corrosion.
  • You use new liner o-ring seals
  • You check the liner protrusions are within spec afterwards

Given the amount of crap that'll be sat at the bottom of the liners, I'd suggest removing the crank and shells first so that you've an otherwise bare block before disturbing/removing the liners.

Gives me options. I have a spare 1.6 low milage lump in my dads garage from my CTi ( Mi'd ) , which turned over last time i checked. That might be an option to get me on the road quicker.

 

Just needs a cam belt, but ill do head gasket, water pump and stems while its out of the car.
