1.9 GTI ABS - rear brake load compensators?

Recommended Posts

drj545

Hello,

I’m restoring a ‘91 205 GTI 1.9 with abs, and am currently refurbishing the rear beam. I’ve come across the 2 brake load compensators/regulators at each side (the ones with the small pushrod onto the trailing arm). These have turned to dust on removal, and are impossible to replace.

My question is: Is it worth trying to retrofit a similar compensator/regulator from a 306, or just bin the lot and fit the 2 small inline compensators that a 1.9 without abs would have (those fitted behind the fuel tank)?

I’ve seen this picture below which I think is a 205, but has a 306 compensator fitted. I would only need the 1 unit, but would have to run both pipes to the rear of the car to it, and then a pipe across the beam to the other wheel. Is it worth the hassle?

I think I’d go for the non abs 1.9 compensators

If you want to go for as original as possible, you might want to consider to use these load dependend restrictors. Otherwise, just use the standard ones, you will not notice the difference.

You could argue if using 306 compensators is more 'original' than non-abs 205 restrictors...

Thanks for the replies.

I’m not too precious about originality - if I could find some original compensators at a reasonable cost I’d buy and fit them, but they don’t seem to be available. If the in-line compensators work then great - just don’t want the back to lock up if I stomp on the brakes!

Phoned the dealer today to see if they could help, but they no longer supply them - long shot I know.

I’ve got bigger things to worry about anyway as can be seen below!

Dealer won't have them, but you will for sure be able to find them online (not cheap though).
Nice project, will need a bit of elbow grease :)

Just to complete the circle on this topic, just last week I chanced upon a NOS compensator on eBay.fr that was being listed for a Renault. And the other night while rocking the youngest to sleep at 2am, found a Dutch Brake Specialist that had 1 in stock! I did ask if they had any more, but sadly not.

For info, the Bendix reference numbers for these are 631678 and/or 311678B.

I do think using 2 x 4 port 306 compensators with 2 ports blanked would work.

I have the originals still, so might see about getting them overhauled at some point, will compare with the new ones to see if they’re functioning properly. They do move but I’m not sure if they move enough.

Although it’s probably costed ~£250 for these compensators where the inline ones are close to £110 for 2, I am saving on needing the brake pipe brackets that mount on the floor, which cost about £35, so I’m only about £100 more…man maths!

I'm fitting an entire ABS system from a 306 to a 205 as an 'upgrade' on the 205 system. The loom is entirely self contained (the ECU is built into the pump unit rather than separate in the boot), and the rear load compensator is still available, as are all of the reluctor rings and sensors etc. There's more faff with all of the pipework required, but if you want to keep ABS, I'd recommend upgrading, for ease of replacement parts/reliability if nothing else. I just harvested the entire ABS system off a 306 HDi estate if I recall correctly!

Thanks for the info. I’m not that bothered about having ABS, it’s just that the car has it already and I’d like to see if I can get it working again. It’s meant to be a bit of a hopeless system anyway.

Any major headaches with it will see me rip the whole lot out!
