Mi16 starter motor wiring

Recommended Posts

Nbettley

Hi guys, bit of a problem with the mi16 engine fit. Starter motor is kicking in too early on the ignition key. As soon as you turn it to the third position for switched 12v the starter motor kicks in. The engine starts and then the starter remains engaged. Just wondering if anyone has had this issue? Has anyone got a wiring diagram showing the feed to the solenoid on the starter?

swap the ignition live and the starter wire in the brown plugs under the dash by the  steering column, you can easily pop open the side of the connector housing and pull the pin out.

a not uncommon issue as the position of these two wires changed at some point during production so if you swap the loom from a different age conversion you can come across this

Cheers will give this a whirl tomorrow, is this the 4 way multiplug coming out the back of the ignition? Mine only has 2 connections in here.

no, down where the engine loom goes through the bulkhead.

As Mei says - look in the footwell above and to the left of the clutch pedal and you'll see the loom coming through the bulkhead, and if you follow that for a few inches, you'll see a couple of brown multiplugs - swap the thick red and thick light blue wires around and that should resolve the issue.  The position of those two wires swapped around early 1991 around the time of the Ph2 models, and a loom or guide written for one age of car can cause just the issues you're experiencing if used on a different age.
