Power steering gear column bush replacement

Recommended Posts

I removed the (power assisted) steering rack from my 205 1.9 GTi due to fluid leaking from the point where the column enters the rack gear. Bought a new bush repair kit from Ebay (Peugeot part number 400609.) Now I can;t figure out how to disassemble the rack to get the new bush kit in. Can anyone help? Have I bought the right part? Really don't want to take whole rack apart as the rest seems fine, was just the PAS fluid leak. Thanks!

you've bought a rack bush kit, which wont fix a leak on the pinion seal.   they are secured by a circlip, easy to see when you have the boot off.

Any ideas how to fix the leak on the pinion? (That was the term I was struggling to find, thanks!) Is there a bush/seal where it's currently leaking? So what I've bought, there's one either end of the rack, right? Probably worth using now I've got it all out, maybe on the nearside which gets more abuse, or should I change both rack bushes at same time?

You need to carefully remove the three stakes that retains the steel shim and the pinion seal. A die grinder (with appropriate bit) is useful. Some butchers just hit the pinion out, shearing off the stakes.

You'll never fit the inner seals by yourself. They need to be warmed in oil before fitting, otherwise they stretch.

My advice would be to take the pinion assembly to a power steering specialist and have them fully service it.
