I agree. I’d pull out the liners and do it properly. You’re playing with fire.

Thanks Leslie, there are normally 12-14 races in a season plus some testing.  We try to refresh the shells at the end of every other season (approx 1200 miles/15 hours - albeit flat out) but just don't have the budget for regular liner & ring replacement.

Oh I see I didn't realise it is apart so regularly so the rest should be OK, liner seals are more an age related problem .

I really should have said :).  We do a compression test before the strip downs, and it doesn't smoke or use excessive oil, there is never any oil in the catch tank.  I like the idea of the rings being as 'loose' as possible, from the PoV of mechanical friction.  In this championship, every 1/2bhp counts

A follow on question regarding gaskets.  I bought this set:

 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/194067155598

Everything in it seems good, but should there also be a gasket for the oil pump chain cover?

I don't remember it being missing from the sets I've bought for previous rebuilds.  To be fair, the seller doesn't list the B6D block, but that would be a significant change to the engine design :-)
