Fuel Cap Trim Removal ??

Has any bod removed one of these fuel cap trims ?

 

I'd like to remove the flat GTi version and put on the sawtooth standard one but I've never done it before and don't wanna break anything

 

(fettle it for a bit ? a hammer, small one maybe ?)

 

there does not appear to be any obvious release points so outta ideas, bit like the glovebox lock actually..

It does come off because I had mine off when it was repainted. I seem to recall it just pops off but it was not me who did it and so am not 100% sure. If nobody comes back with exactly how it comes off I will touch base with the guy that did it and find out for you. Whether you can swap one kind for another i would have no idea.

they are a direct swap, the cap with the flat GTi trim used to have the sawtooth trim on it originally

 

maybe one of the tinkerers out there will know how to git it orff without damage

If you get the cap warm, as the plastic will be brittle, there is a lug on the trim which lips over the cap. Very gently, ease that lip away and up from the cap edge.

 With that lifted up, push the trim back, as there is a shoulder on the cap behind the key part which the trim locates in. The trim should then just push off.

Hope this makes sense.

thanks david, all makes sense

I warmed it up

found the tab you referred to and starting in with a very small flathead

it has a little bit of give, but then I bottled it!

I hate breaking things

I can't see it bending enough to come off

think I'll try buy the trim on its own

If you end up breaking just the locking tabs of the trim , stick it back with some PU adhesive/sealant and say nobody about it !

 

I might have a few of those with the trim removed , will see if i can find one for photo sample .

Start from the back , unclip and lift up , then push forward and with an small screwdriver work around the front side locking tab and it'll release .

Not sure if it helps but if you break it when removing it I've got a new one here which I will never use that I could send to you.

thanks for the generous offer dale,

 

I've had success, of sorts

 

encouraged into having another go ..

the caps both came off really well

pushed the little front underside tab (pictured) out and then back

once it clears the rim it was easy to just push the trim toward the back of the cap until the rear tab was unhooked

 

but to warm the plastic I put the cap in the steamer for 2 mins 

and think it may have damaged the plastic, it went blotchy

 I drenched it in this plastic trim product called ArmorAll when it was still warm but dunno if I've wrecked the plastic or not

so dont do what I done, use a hair dryer or put it in the hot sun for a bit

there's a lot of power in steam and zero in peugeot plastic

 

Let me know what you'd like for the cap plus the shipping to australia

I'll check the plastic again tomorrow and if its shot will send an SOS

if not needed thanks anyway

That's no problem Gohn,

 

Nice work and hopefully it will be ok and not to damaged. 

 

I don't want anything for this mate, I found it in a box in the car years ago when I bought it so cost me nothing. There's actually 2 of them if anybody else needs one?.

Key is to get it warm and as above, start with the rear outside clip of grey cover while pushing slightly inwards. Once you slide/remove that, the painted part can be unclipped. A set of picks and/or tiny screwdriver helps.
