Hey all , got myself a 205 1.9 gti to add to my collection, its an MOT fail due to high Carbon Monoxide , the car starts fine , but it runs terrible , and smokes badly (not blue though more grey) , plugs are black ,anyway i am guessing it is running too rich, but this is my first pug , so i was after advice where to start, i get it will need setting up properly eventual, but at moment getting it to run ok would be a start, have ordered new plugs etc , and a timing gun (that was a blast from the past ) but again i know nothing about these cars , if it was a beemer or a mini etc i be ok

looking forward to advice

Timing gun! Don't think I ever used one on a 205.

Replace the sparks for sure , get a workshop manual and set it up according to that . Its explained pretty well.

Damir  will no doubt be along shortly to help.

Yeah !

Thinking it'll be either bad CTS (ECU coolant temp. sensor) stuck/fault reading cold post warm up period , or someone's been tampering with the AFM spring tension .

CTS sensor can be checked/tested with mutimeter , but i'd replace it anyway especially if it's old as it's cheap and makes for "preventive maintence" . Very important yet cheap sensor .

If it's that bad that it's pumping out grey smoke , kinda inclined more on the AFM adjustment tampering .

Remove top air box-to-AFM hose and try poking the AFM flap door with an screwdriver or similar .. try to sense if there's any resistance in the flap door opening/closing movement , when the AFM is set up properly the flap door will be under slight tension/resistance upon opening/closing .. if you can push it open/close freely with no tension/resistance felt that'll be bad and will need to adjust the AFM .

Unfortunately , in order to properly adjust the AFM you'll need someone with an exhaust gas analyzer machine or wideband sensor setup for monitoring air/fuel mixture as you preform the adjustment .

Can try temporarily making i a little bit better by feel/ear/smell with no tools , until you find someone with the equipment to make the precise adjustment , if you're keen on trying that out we can discuss the process .

Also check the allen screw on the AFM , this one needs to be set 7-to-8 turns out from fully in .. but that effects idle mixture only .

Depleted

Tony, the sensors should be located on the back of the engine block under the distributor area.
I've just replaced two of my three block sensors which are for the coolant and warning light, hopefully this picture may help you a tad, there are three sensors in this picture, i think the lower one with the green connection is the ECU probe but i could be wrong as my car is a simple little 1.6 automatic. But I could be wrong as i'm learning as i go.

If that picture is useless to you, may i direct you to the very helpful miamistu site that has diagrams for everything 205 related. http://www.miamistu.co.uk/pug/

you'll need to do some searching but it should be located in the engine equipment section.

Late Ph2 models have it as on the photo above , all the others have it on a separate housing down below the distributor .

Stolen photo for demonstration purpose :

Lots of different aftermarket brands of those to choose ... anyhow , OE part number for the 205 CTS is : 0242 46

Bosch : 0 280 130 026 .. is what they came with from the factory .

The same CTS fits various other cars makes/models , don't let that confuse you .
