89 405 Mi16 Gearbox Options

Recommended Posts

Dazzellbrush

Hi everyone,

I’m Daryl and I live in Spain, my 89 405 Mi16 is needing a replacement gearbox.

I found an original Mi16 box and it has just been fitted but the mechanic says he can’t get it to go in reverse.

My old box was losing gears and popping out etc.

What are the best options to retain performance and also ease of fitting?

I have searched through posts but I’m not sure what is the best advice relevant to 2020.

Many Thanks

Dou you have the right Mi16 gearbox? The BE1R and BE3R from the Mi16 looks almost the same but reverse isn't on the same place

My mechanic thinks so but you may be right, mine is a phase 1 so I need the BE1R ?

Or is it an overlapping year etc?

If I can’t get a replacement Mi16 box could I use another Peugeot/Citroen box ?

My faith in my mechanic is going down !

Thanks for the reply, I’m new to this scene and I’m finding it hard to get my head around it haha.

If it’s the BE3R what can I do to fit that one instead presuming it works correctly?

BE1r does not exist, be3r is post 98.

are there any other gears missing?   if the top arm has been removed for example to fit a 205 arm (or remove one)   and is allowed to drop into the box and misaligned with the selector mechanism you will lose gears.

sounds like clutch issues, maks sure the cable is adjusted correctly and that the clutch arm is not cracked.

also that it has the correct gear oil!

BE1 for Mi16 is quite unique. There wouldn’t be many of those laying around.

The BE1 on a 405 is specific in that it uses the BE3 type clutch release arm.

Some photos would help but its quite possible the box fitted is a BE3 which would look externally the same. If so reverse is now behind 5th not next to 1st.

I would say the best long term course of action is have the box that has come out of your car rebuilt and put it back.

Did he swap the lever on top of the box and let the axle drop inside? Might have moved the fork inside before pulling it back?

The BE1 has the cable for the reverse on top of the box; should notice that you can't put it somewhere if you fit a BE3.

Most Mi16 gearboxes I've seen were BE1's, so maybe it differs per country.

My original box is a BE1, can’t see the other one yet until it’s taken off.

We are going to look at the original box and try and repair it.

Thanks again.

well reverse will be in a different place if you have used a be3 replacement, and if the be1 reverse detent cable was fitted to a be3 you will lose some gears from memory
