Possible Red Trim Alternative?

Recommended Posts

When I got my car last year the outer plastic drivers door panel was ill fitting and both it and the red trim insert wouldn't stay on properly.

I've since realised it was just that the panel wasn't put on correctly and now that the clips are as they should be all's well again (plus a refurb / repaint helped).

Before I knew it could be fixed I'd looked into getting replacement bits, but soon discovered availability and price were a bit of a shocker.

One of the things I'd considered was just replacing the metal trim with this plastic stuff.

It's virtually the same breadth at 1/2" - 18mm, and sits in the slot perfectly.

It started out as T - Slot trim for gaming machines and would have cost about £25 - £30 at the time to get a roll for the entire car.

The seller sent the 2 x samples you see, one's a slightly darker red than the other. The real trim piece is painted 'cherry red' for comparison.

I simply sliced off the up right of the 'T' shape with a blade...easy to do as it followed the line of the plastic naturally.

I lashed up some household double sided foam tape, but it wasn't particularly good... you'd need to source a stronger automotive equivalent.

I didn't take this any further as I'd no need, but someone may want to investigate a bit more and save a few quid into the bargain.

There's others, but this is where I got the samples - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RED-ARCADE-T-MOLDING-10FT-ROLL-NEW-18mm-T-moulding-ARCADE-BARTOP-MACHINE/182521450952?hash=item2a7f2051c8:g:ehkAAOSwJkFduJFa

Nice one !

Might be good alternative to the OE trim , as the price for the OE set is ridiculous .. and it's the same old thin/flimsy material .

Since then i simply lost patience with patching that red trim insert parts (it tends to be extremely windy here) , or being extra careful not to kink or dent the trim and took everything off leaving just the black trim panels with blanked insert center areas ..

I've seen also someone (on a French forum i think ?!) fitted strips of aluminum , just cut to length and painted red .. looked quite neat too .

I got stuff off car builder, it looks fine on the bumpers but the sides need some packing and the clips trimmed down.
