Fuel Pressure Booster...

Just found out I've what i think is an Italian 'Malpassi' fuel pressure regulator / booster fitted.

 

There's likely different types but I can't access fully the rear without taking it off to see more casting details, which I don't want to do myself, not having experience of working on fuel systems!

 

Googling shows me what it is / does etc. and that it's possibly one in the same as a DSE Sytec item marketed in the UK.

 

At the moment it seems to be doing its job, so I've no plans to change it... Having said that, it appears to have been on for a while and I've been unsuccessful trying to source on-line fitting / set-up instructions should the time come to either replace / have it looked at.

 

Anyone running one or something similar / have or know where to get more technical info?

 

It's on a standard 1989 1.9 engine with no other obvious 'upgrades'... cheers.

I have one on my daily 205 for about 10-12 years now .. had some fueling issue after engine mods thus needed more richer mixture .

 

You really need a proper mechanical fuel pressure gauge in order to set it up precisely , or better still a WB probe/gauge .. otherwise you'll be lost at where to set it by ear/feel it's pretty much impossible.

 

To make adjustment , it's really simple .. undo and remove the 12mm cap nut on the front , crack loosen the main locking nut behind it and with an flat screwdriver turn the screw/shaft clockwise to increase the pressure or counterclockwise to reduce . Once set , hold the screw/shaft firmly in that position with the screwdriver and tight back the main locking nut , put the cap nut back (there's an gasket ring in-between so take care not to drop it/lose it) and job done .

 

If it's std. engine , set it to the std. fuel pressure spesc .

 

Anyhow , it's called "FSE power boost valve" .. fell free to ask if you want more info .

That's excellent, thanks... Looks like a straightforward bit of kit.

 

I don't have the car all that long, and I've not had a 205 before to compare it to, but it seems to drive very well, so I'll assume it's been set up correctly.

You'll find mostly bad things said about it if you research ... like "bore wash" due to over-fueling , unstable pressure etc.

 

Well part of that is obviously because of the poor adjustment , when adjusted properly there's really no harm to the engine neither the increased fuel consumption .

Aside from that , it's fueling system component so any faults or hazards caused by it could've easily ended up with lawsuits .. not so much manufacturers want that or deal with all that crap .

 

Last 6 or 7 years i also have an WB probe and gauge permanently installed in that 205 with the "FSE" , and thus i have a clear view on what's happening with the mixture across the rev range .

I did some comparison with OE press. reg. and this the "FSE" , and i can tell you for sure that (surprisingly) the air/fuel mixture is actually more stable on low/mid revs with the "FSE" , with the OE press. reg. the mixture swings back and forth quite a bit on anything bar WOT or from mid to high revs when you floor it . And that one is brand new OE Bosch press. reg. which i had for comparison .

 

Noticed no ovefueling whatsoever across the rev range (just a smidgen richer at full WOT , but better still) , with it adjusted properly .

 

Only thing is , they tend to leak when old around the gaskets .. but then again some do some don't even with lots of years of use , and they might split apart if damaged in the front end collision as they're not capsule type regulator .

 

If it's been on the engine for a while , i can only suggest checking the main O-ring on the valve where it joins/connects to the fuel rail .. remove it and inspect the O-ring , as it can deteriorate .. it's the same dimension as the std. injector O-ring thus if it's bad replace it or replace as preventive if you plan on keeping it .

Iv got one of them on my turbo, Car is going in to be mapped, hopefully next month, is it recommend to bin it and get a standard one?
