This has now turned into a full restoration project

I thought it was about time I started a restoration thread.

I originally acquired the car back in 2009 and proceeded to convert it to mi16 power which I fully rebuilt, installed and ran for six months as I decided to replace the roof skin with a solid one.

 

Fast forward 11 years due to life getting in the way this now developed into a full restoration project.


Finally got the roof replaced

Whilst I was at it I decided to tackle the drivers side sill which was just in desparate need of replacing.

Upon further investigation I decided to go the full hog and strip the car to a shell and fit it on a spit (once I got it emptied) to make a proper job of it.

 

Especially after seeing some of the restorations on here.

Yes it’s my Dads old car, bought from Distington new and serviced there for the first ten plus years. Sat in his garage from 2000 until we dragged it out in 2015 and re commissioned it. Got it signed by Ari Vatanen in 2017, I think my old dad would have gone mad if we’d done that when he was alive! We got the rear ride height wrong but it’s now back up to standard height.

I just read your post it's nice to see you've kept hold of it in your dad's memory.

Six months work was enough for me. Wouldn’t like to do it again. Just on standard maintenance now, can’t believe it’s time to change the cambelt again. Hope to see yours around when it’s finished.

As expected I new the the front chassis legs and jacking points were in bad condition and prepared for this by obtaining  a full floor section for £40 advertised locally on ebay.

Unfortunately the jacking points had been cut through so if anybody has a pair in good condition surplus to requirements I would interested, as the alternative is to purchase repair panels of empa.

 

I have made a start on replacing the rot and the drivers side damaged chassis leg which looking at it I think the previous owner has hit every speed bump they could find.

Removed the petrol tank to assess the rot which was clearly visible around the rear seat area and was greeted with this.

 

I have since removed the rust off the inner sill using blit hambers deox c gel which I was very impressed with as to how effective it was.

 

Since the rust had been removed I set about repairing the inner panel and the front corner of the rear seat area.

Busy afternoon repairing / fabricating the drivers side floor section (that get mistaken for jacking points) using the the EMPA repair sections.

 

They still need a bit of work on the top section which I will doing tomorrow, prior to welding them on the car.

That's great work and I wish those panels were available when I did mine had to make my own , supply of rust free cars mush be drying up now as a good  few more cars getting fixed that would until recently have been scrapped due to rust which is good to see . As is often the case once you start poking its always turns into a big job.

Thanks, I tried to find some replacements but as you say a lot have been scrapped now, they are very good quality just take bit of patience to make them fit right.

Agree 100% - I built one for my Morris 1000 resto as a teenager and it was so much easier.

I meant to ask how did you removed the underseal?

I've had a go with the twist-knot brush on my grinder but it's pretty noisy. Thinking of heat gun and scraper for the next shot.
