Possible to renew bearings and rings with engine in car ? ?

Don't have a lot of space or a crane.

Alternatively, when removing gearbox, head, thermostat, radiator, all hoses and accessories etc. and only the block is left, is it possible to simply pull it out by hand ?

How much does only the block with crank and pistons weigh by itself ?

Thanks !

I cant answer that question from particular experience, however by the time you have removed all the items you mention, can you not drop the engine out from below? Probably the safest/easiest.

certainly possible with a good trolley jack under the subframe and something to lower the engine onto, a trolley or some old tyres, getting it back in is rather more tricky though.

you would be much better off borrowing or hiring a crane.

a bare 8v is about 78 kilos, the head is around 18 iirc.

Thanks both, guess it's better to arrange for a crane and engine stand, 78kg is a bit much, especially moving it back in alone.

Out of curiosity, haven't got the lay out sharp in mind now, but why do you need a trolley under the subframe ? Can't you put a trolley under the engine (with some wood to prevent damage) and simply drive it out the front, when bumper, rad, slam panel etc. are all removed ?

Probably stupid question, sorry if it is :-)

There is a fixed section on the bottom of the front panel by the bottom of the radiator that prevents that unfortunately.

Buy/borrow engine crane or ,

Lift the front end up high enough to gain clearance (for the engine) and support on jack stands , remove the subframe , radiator , alternator and inlet manifold .. lower the engine down on the floor maneuvering/supporting it from underneath with 3 floor jacks and few blocks of wood , and pull it out sideways (towards the wheel left or right doesn't matter) .

Another option - remove the head off the block whist it's still inside the car , and lift the front end up and pull from underneath just the block ..

Back inside is reverse of out obviously .. 3 floor jacks and a little bit of patience , and it's doable , not as hard as it seems .  Did the engine removal for quite a while like so until i bought engine crane .

If you can get 600mm under the front, you can drop the engine onto some plywood and drag it out whole.

Thanks for tips !

This sounds like an option for me : "remove the head off the block whist it's still inside the car , and lift the front end up and pull from underneath just the block"
