Engine block

Hi,

 

Is this a picture of the engine block or the engine block mount ?

 

I think the missing notch was spotted when the cam belt was changed a few years back.

 

Can this be welded or does it need to be replaced if it fails ?

You might want to add some clarification to this or better pictures. I've had a few beers but tbh I just read this , looked at the picture and the title and thought 'what the f*"k?'

The picture isn't very clear, but it's all I was given by the garage.

 

There is a notch missing from the aluminium. The garage seemed to think this would develop into an issue at some point soon and the engine would need to be removed.

 

Is the picture of the engine block or of the engine block mount ?

Now honestly , we need an proper picture .

 

I even tried to adjust brightness/contrast etc. but still can't figure out anything .

think I’ve got it, that’s the engine block, where the water pump bolts in.

in which case that may well cause a leak around the water pump - ideally engine out, weld up and refinish the water pump gasket surface.

 

might get away with it, but hard to tell how much material is left from the photo.

Thanks Alex. It's not causing a problem at the moment. The cam belt was changed in 2015 and the picture was taken then. The car has been is use ever since.

 

I guess leave it unless a water leak develops ? 

 

The block could be welded if necessary ?

I'd just fill that groove with epoxy metal ... but even as it is now , it looks to have enough surface left for the WP gasket so seal up so should be fine .

Yes, if it’s not leaking then leave i’d leave well alone

 

Just keep an eye on coolant level from time to time.

 

Don’t see why the block couldn’t be welded, but if the engine is coming out might be cheaper just to find a good donor block. Or as Damir said you could try epoxy metal, and fix it in situ.
