Driving Lamps

Just been for a drive and noticed once i'd turned the stalk for full beam the driving lights wouldn't turn off when i went back to main beam unless i turned the lights off altogether and back on again. Would this have anything to do with the fact my headlight bulb has gone? I've never had a bulb go while i've had the gti so wondered if this was some kind of 205 thing to let you know the bulb has gone.... ps what should i replace the bulb with? Should i go with oe pug bulbs or the ice white ones (or similar) from somewhere like halfrauds?

When you use the stalk for full beam they latch on via a relay, this I'm thinking is a standard mod for Rallying as you can put a set of auxilary lights onto the circuit as well, you should flick the stalk again and it will go back to dip beam as normal,

if I'm reading what you've said as correct.

Regards Russ......

I'll say that again, think i might have confused you! when i turn on the full beam from main beam the driving lights come on too as they should, but on going back to main beam, the driving lights stay on when they're meant to turn off. The only way to turn them off is to turn the lights off completely and go back to main beam. The nearside bulb (the headlight) only seems to be working on side light when on side, main or full beam so i suspect it needs replacing and this is the reason behind the problem and fitting new bulbs will sort it out. Basically i just need to know if i'm right or wrong :)

I think you mean Dip beam rather than main beam there.

Anyway, I doubt if a blown bulb has anything to do with it, I presume the relay that controls the driving lamps is sticking, or badly earthed or similar.

Check the earth points on the radiator (n/s front) theres 2 of these. one towards the top and a second midway down the radiator.

I spent a week looking for the problem and initially suspected a dodgy stalk, however with the help of perfecto off of here it turned out to be the earthing points had corroded badly. A clean up greasing of those points sorted it and (touch wood) its still working now. :)

Are you using high powered bulbs in either your headlights or driving lights?

I had the same problem as you and I suspect the extra current was causing the relay to overheat and stick. I changed back to standard bulbs as it seemed rather dangerous and it cured itself.

If you're on standard bulbs already the I'd suspect a faulty relay but try replacing your blown bulb first and see if it makes a difference.

i'm assuming the bulbs are standard, haven't checked but the colour of the light suggests they are! I'll get some new bulbs today, if they dont resolve the problem i'll cry for a while and try the suggested ideas! Thanks

have you replaced your headlight bub yet? I found that a blown headlamp bulb will make the driving lights stick on. Replacing the bulb in the headlamp cured the problem.

i'm sure i read somewhere in the haynes manual about the 205's lights having a sort of feature that didn't allow you to drive around on just sidelights - somehow it forces more lights on. i'll have a butchers tonite to see what's what

Dunno about that, I do know that the sidelights dimly light up the whole headlight though as opposed to being really small little things that tend to be fitted. As far as I know though its perfectly possible to run on just sidelights, done it myself a couple of times over the last week as its been sort of dim but not dark as such.

I read that over and over again in the haynes manual until i understood it, i then experimented with it.... and found it to be nothing short of utter crap. :)

changed the bulbs...that didn't seem to work (unless the new bulb didn't work either!) I've swapped over all the relays too which didn't help. I haven't checked the earth points yet cos i can't get under the car! Gonna take it to the garage next week now i'm finally unskint (new word), and have a word with the owner (used to mow his lawn as a kid so he'll do minor repairs for free :) ) i have a spare stalk just in case it's that. I can almost guarentee i'll take it there and he'll fix it straight away lol.

Is it just one headlight that doesn't work? If it is it could be the connectors on the back of the headlights. The wires going to the multiplug on the back of the headlamp can break quite easily where they connect to the plug.

They have a dim dip system which feeds a low current to the dipped beam bulbs when the sidelights are switched on 7 the engine is running, it works on all my Pugs anyway.

If they are staying on when they shouldn't I would lay blame on a bad earth, that would be when they aren't working as they should IMO, which you also have so checkit anyway they are a common fault on the lights.

If the bulbs are working when switched to main beam or full beam they aren't at fault, the relay is the main suspect or the column stalk.

Good luck, electrics can be a pain to fix.

finally got it fixed yesterday :o turned out to be the connecter causing a mini short out which was stopping the relay from switching properly! Had a problem with my indicators too, again caused by a dodgy connector. Anyway, 88p for parts.....£30 for labour :o:o

Mine done exactly what yours done 2 days ago.

Trusty wd40 around all the connectors sorted it though!

Plus the car jumped up 128bhp!! :o

i should have added at the time, the labour included fitting of a new pair of clear frront indicators. One had the lense fall off and the other cracked when i tapped it lightly with the palm of my hand as a temporary repair for the indicator problem!! Good old 205 build quality eh? Safe as (straw) houses B)
