BE3 clutch cable installation - what am I missing here?

Just replacing my BE3 Clutch cable that broke the other day. Bought original replacement and the new cable is the same. I'm missing the adjustment part of the old one, as that was what broke off. 

Now, installing by removing clutch pedal, it looks like I'm missing something. The clutch lever with the big eye fits with the disc and washer, but the plastic part following the washer seems out of place an the cable is way to long to even adjust correctly. Maybe a part needed fell off when the old cable broke, or I'm an imbecile at installing it. Last being very likely.. Here is a few pics of the assembly in the engine bay (on pic 2 you can see how far I can pull the cable by hand with the other end attached to the pedal):

It clips into a slot in the gearbox under the battery tray.

You mean this part? (the plastic bit with the spring loaded parts that can be pushed in?):

 

 

I thought of that, but couldn't see anything. The spring was broken on my old one, so I just hang there.. But there is a square-ish bracket or something in there?

Yes, there is a U shaped slot in the gearbox casing that it clips into.
