Rear beam rebuild advice

Recommended Posts

Telf

I'm after some advice about rebuilding the rear beam please.

I've read the guide and watched a few videos on YouTube but still have some questions.

First the inner bearings that are in the wasted portion of the beam-can anybody tell me what depth they are at? I was thinking I'd press them down using the old arm tube but I'm not sure?

Also as I'm not sure what the ride height was should I assemble the beam and leave the anti roll bar and torsion bar out then fit the beam to the car and insert said bars then to set the correct height.  I'm not sure the best way to proceed.

Many thanks

Paul

Setting the height put the shock absorber bolts 330mm apart centre to centre.

Cannot help on the bearing question though. Just measure the one you take out?

This is my tool/mandrel. It inserts the two bearings in one operation. The inner is 210mm from the outside of the tube.

And it looks like the outer is recessed by 5mm?

Yes, for the seal. That’s fitted with a different tool.

Not for GTi spec torsion bars - dummy shock setting is approx 322mm for standard height with GTi bars.

We tend to get asked to build beams giving a slight drop over standard, and use 318mm centres on the dummy shock, but if it's for a rally car I'd suggest 322 as above due to losing out on damper travel when you lower the beam slightly.

Also make sure the seals have the right protrusion to prevent water ingress

The inner bearings went in without issue . We put them on the old arms and tapped them in. With liberal grease they disengaged and sat at the right depth.

The outer bearings somehow caused a bigger issue as one side didn't recess to the same depth as the other. I was slightly concerned but when the arms where fitted they both settled at the same point.

With regard to the torsion bars I'm aware they are specific to one side but there are no markings on mine. Is there may way to tell?
