Hello,

 

Finally opening my own thread.

 

I've been a long time fan of 205GTI and drove basic version in the beginning of 90's.

 

Started again 2016 and this time with GTI's. I have no big plans to do anything major, but instead work on the cars in the winters and drive them in the summer-time.

 

Plan is to post a picture or little stories once in a while here and participate the community that way. 

 

My cars - #1 - 205 XS is basically waiting for decisions what to do with it..

==> Used here wet-wacuum cleaner, steam cleaner, dish soap, hot water... glad surprice that it is turning to be very tidy. I was worried about rust etc...

==> I don't know if it's necessary, but decided to renew also the hose-clamps with stainless ones, at least they look shiny when new and clean.

Car #4, a little progress..

Finished the longest timing belt change project of my life,

- Started it in november 2017!! (outdoors in Finland, suddenly the winter arrived and it brought the coldness and darkness with it, work stopped for a long time...)

- Then other things in life made this thing not to go forward

- Now the car is in warm place and this could be finished, I'm so happy about it :)

- In case there's other people besides me also thinking which goes where, I made this tutorial to help them, hope the data is correct.

Car #4, a little progress..

This weekend I could only spend couple of hours with the car. Decided to change the distributor parts.

Also removed the brake pads on both ends of the car to confirm which type pads to order.

Car #4, a little progress..

Re-routed the oil temp sensor cable by making those cable holders. Now it stays away from hot or moving parts,

Also removed the "Brown Multiplug" on top of the transmission by soldering and heat schrinking the wires to make it a little bit more reliable.

Last week spent my winter holidays with kids, so nothing really happened.

 

Oh, something anyway.

- Removed the S-shaped fuel hoses from the fuel pump to under the car.

- Then put long hoses to the pump and run the pump directly from the battery.

- Managed to get almost 10 litres of guite dark coloured bad smelling fuel to the canister (maybe 5 years old fuel) and the tank should be guite empty now.

- Then put new S-shaped hoses with new clamps back.

 

Also picked up new oil and coolant and sealant from the shop.

 

Next mission is to put all the liquids in and try to start the car... Exited!!!

Car #4, Checking things before trying to start the car..

 

- Removed all the ignition parts

- Put some oil into cylinders

- Checked to upstairs (been watching too much youtube-horror movies about totally rusted engines...) anyway oiled everything also from here

- Then rotated the engine manually

- Then rotated with starter motor (was happy to see that the starter motor could rise the oil pressure to 4bars!!)

 

==> Everything seemed to be OK...

Car #4, Started the car first time for 2 years

 

+ It's running very nicely

+ Idle speed is in the right area and stable

- Oil pressure went sky high when cold (semi-syn 10W40 oils)

- The exthaust is leaking badly at least in two points

- Exhaust manifold is propably cracked

- Radiator blower is propably not working

This weekend was too cold weather for running the engine.

 

Instead I  started changing the locks for the car. Managed to change the boot, Fuel cap and the passanger door (right side door in my case). 2 more to go :)

Car #4, Starting do to some tidying up and some painting..

 

Now, please note that this is total-amateur material with rattle cans, total re-paint would be nice, but not possible within my budget at the moment. Also, I want to practise doing everything by myself altough there aremeny things that I have no practise before..

 

Anyway, managed to remove all front suspension parts and do some cleaning.

 

Then decided to paint some rusted parts before rebuilding the suspension.

And a question following.

 

If I now want to remove the sub-frame (and take first the steering and gearlinkage away) is it possible for me to do without removing the engine and gearbox first?

- Meaning, will they stay nicely there with just the left and right side upper mounts attached??

Yes, you can safely remove the subframe and leave the engine/gearbox held in place by the remaining two mounts.
