Jacking up the rear using the axle?

This may sound like a stupid question, but I have avoided jacking up the 205 using the centre of the rear axle, but I have seen images. Of others doing it. Is it acceptable to do this without causing any damage?

If so it will make jacking up the rear of the car a lot quicker
