Steering rack - splines or square

Recommended Posts

Jakob

Hi, I am in the process of building a heavily modded 205 turbo. I need a non-servo "steering rack" (do not know the right english term) unit with splines to fit the steering axle in my CTI  from 1993.  I found a 205 GTI version, but it has the square flange - I need the splines or something to make it match.

Does anyone know from which model I should look for to pick one with splines and no servo?

Thanks

Non power steering racks up to 1988 are spline connection. You will also need the lower column to suit as the power one is shorter.

The power rack can be made to fit with the turbo.

Great thanks, so I go on the hunt for a regular 205 non power steering rack up to 1988, plus the lower column (with splines threaded) as those are longer without power steering.

It dosnt have to be a GTI, right - any non power 205 steering rack up to 88 will do right?

Thanks!

Why don't you just remove the servo from your current rack?

The non-servo rack is 3.8 turns. Your servo rack will be 3.2 or 3.3 (don't know exactly, but less turns).

Other option is to exchange the lower column to a square drive one.

Yes, I thought of this. Just not sure whether it is a good idea to plug the holes and run it without lubrication in the servo-cylinders - that would be the easy fix!  Any experience or thoughts on this?

And yes, I also have the option to find a lower column to a square drive one, but I rather have the splines when adjusting. But yes, could be the solution as well.

Note that you have to remove the cylinder from the rack. (Only 2 bolts).

You need to blank off the rack itself.

It's done before by many others, including me..
