1986 Phase 1 205 1.6 GTi restoration

Welcome to the world’s slowest 205 GTi  project.

 

I bought this 205 as something to tinker with when I was at uni back in 2005 and 205’s were cheap as chips!

 

Since then, very little got done to it, apart from getting started every now and again, the odd wash and and a few bits getting stripped off, until 2017 when we bought a new house, trailered it over and pushed it into the garage.

 

Below are pictures of the day I got it and the day it headed up to our new house.

Over the years I’ve been picking up plenty of parts for its restoration.

 

Once at its new Home I got started on stripping the front end down and removing the head which went off to Noble Motorsport for a rebuild. This ended up including a brand new original spec camshaft from Kent Cams.

 

The aim for the restoration is to have it almost fully original (bar maybe 1.9 wheels, I haven’t quite decided).

 

It needs a couple of small bits of welding but on the whole has stood up well to the British weather.

Watching with interest - reminds me of my uncle's car he had new back in the day, and the entire reason I'm into 205s.

I’m really torn with the wheels. I’ve got a good while to make the decision before it’s close to being road ready.

 

Had a first go with some Wurth grey plastic dye, has come up quite well. Just all the rest to do now!

Oh cool, might have to head down and take a look. I’ll probably have to be in my Impreza unless my 106 passes it’s mot and is ready in time. What time do you meet?

It’s been a long time since I’ve been on here!

 

Sadly not a huge amount to report. The cars is further stripped down and a few welding repairs identified, mainly the bulkhead below the brake servo.

 

Got some cuts from scrapped shells that will hopefully come in handy for repairing it.

 

A new windscreen needs sourcing after the old one didn’t survive removal to get at some bubbling on the frame.

 

Front struts are built up and all outer trim has been cleaned, treated and tucked safely away ready for the eventual rebuild. I’ve also had some parts blasted clean! 

 

The engine bottom end is partially stripped in preparation for new bearings, rings and seals.

 

At the moment while I wait for my mate to become available for the welding repairs, this one is tucked away safe in the garage and I’m sorting my S1 106 for it’s new engine.

Hopefully you can get some progress on the shell soon as like my Gti its not been offload longer than it even was on the road , mine last saw tarmac in 2006  (I got it in 2017 ) but have put myself under pressure to get real progress this year after doing very little this last 4 years .
