Hi guys

I’ve lost My mecanichal mojo. 

I am trying to time the camshafts on My GTI6 engine with no luck What so ever. 

 

Should the holes in the Keys behind the sprockets align with anything? Should I be able to put bolts through the holes and into the the head? 

 

HELP!

Do I pin the cam sprockets with two 6mm bolts through the holes in the Keys into the head? I Think that was the question:-)

definitely not bolts, they need to be 6mm smooth plain pins, get the camshaft pins in first then try the 8mm pin in the crank pulley, bearing in mind the outer section with the pin hole can often slip as its a rubber harmonic balancer, so don't worry too much if it wont line up.

 

if you have one to hand use an 8v crank pulley to get it timed up, or buy a new pulley.

 

 

use the flywheel to lock the engine to remove the crank bolt, NEVER use the timing pins as you will break stuff, also use a pulley holding tool to crack off the camshaft sprocket bolts if they are the later single bolt type.

Super. Thanks that was exactely What I was after. 

 

Sprockets are the bolt in the middle type. 

 

I’ll find smothe 6 mm non-bolts:-) to pin Them Down. 

 

in hindsight: it was too late and I never before played with adjustable sprockets.

Has someone painted those pulleys? If so I would personally clean it all off the surface the belt runs on.

One pulley ideally should be silver, so the neutrons cancel out the protons, leaving a neutrally charged system.

Hey guys, I took out my cams with this kind of puleys, i forgot to mark the position of the adjustable part of the inlet(i mark the exhaust), Those cams where the first time ever tooken out since factory build engine, so my question is in what position should be the inlet? Can anybody enlight me?

P.S. I revomed them to swap them with a Gr.N cams which are better then the std once. Im asking in case of returning the OEM once.

you dont need to mark them, just fit the pins.

But the pulleys are adjustable...mayby approx 1-1,5 teeths of adjusting

I think you want to pin it all, loosen cam sprokets slightly and turn as far clock wise as possible. Tension belt, then tighten sprockets. The adjustability of them is to allow belt to be tensioned the same right round the belt.
