Servicing 205 GTI in the uk

Hi there, 

I am new to the forum, im 19 and have a 1.6l 205 gti 1989 with 58k on the clock completely standard. I have  looked through thousands of questions and topics however I cannot find the one that clearly states the best place to have a Peugeot 205 GTI maintained and serviced. Also with some potential repairs. I am working abroad for a while so dont have the time to do it myself and i cant find a specialist. Ideally near rutland. ( or Leicester) but i want it to be done to a very high standard. Please could someone recommend somewhere.

Most of us on here do the work ourselves so I guess there isn't a lot mentioned on specialists. If it were me I'd travel to Miles @ Pugracing. A long way from you but if you want piece of mind and a top job then Miles is your man. Pug1off also do good quality work and are only in Brackley. I would avoid the Leicester area if I were you.

Hi, my friend runs Motor Tech Automotive in Essendine which is local to you.

 

He looks after my track 205 for me and has had a few gti's himself in the past.  I'm sure he would be able to help you out with servicing to a high standard.

Any good local garage is what I’d say. There’s nothing special about servicing these. If you want top parts just ask your mechanic for OE or high quality parts, they will have a choice from the motor factors as to what price range/quality parts they have access to. Could even request Peugeot parts or provide the Peugeot filters/oil.

I suspected/presumed that @Harrygtistorer wanted to have a place that can also do advanced troubleshooting if required, not just basic servicing...?

And one doesn't just let anyone tamper with their 205 .

I'd love to believe this was the case, but finding a "good" local garage is a chore in itself! I agree that for 90% of the mechanical stuff a good garage should be fine, but I reckon most would stumble of on anything engine management related as so many places just rely on code reading these days. You need a good old school mechanic who really understands the rubbish old Jetronic stuff. Even going back to when Jetronic was current, I think (certainly from stories I've heard any way) a lot of mechanics struggled to properly set it up, hence why a lot of people thought that kangarooing 205 GTIs was just normal expected behaviour.

 

Anything beam related would be another concern. Far too many places don't understand them fully and cut corners with beam maintenance, rebuilds and ride height setting.

Servicing a 205 is bread and butter and not difficult. Other repairs are quite rightly more involved and better tackled by someone with some experience. Choose where you use according to what you need doing.

I guess I’m spoilt spending a lot of time at my good friends garage where anything from carb rebuilds to cambus loom faults is normal. A 205 of any incarnation would be very basic.

@cybernck indeed, There are numerous things i would like to do to get it 100% While i am away. But i just dont have the time, my local garage is clueless when it comes to anything over 20 years old.. (use computers to diagnose issues) :/

Then you're best off with one of the aforementioned 205 specialists that have been mentioned in this topic and also give our members a discount .

My car also kangaroo’s like you wouldnt imagine. Just needs all sorting in one go.

I'm having the same problems as you with the car kangarooing what did you do in the end did you go down to the company Brackley or did you sort the problem yourself
