1000Cc Challenge

Recommended Posts

A few mates and I have decided to do a challenge timed event involving a sub 1000cc n/a car,

I did want to use a nice 205 and put my decent suspension on it but it was decided that 205s even the 1.0L are just too expensive and to be honest under powered compared to newer stuff.

After trawling trough mountains of statistics for 1.0l cars from ax's to micras etc for the best power to weight and reasonable cost we came to the decision of a Toyota Yaris it has 69hp the most we could find for a n/a 1.0L If there is anything better Please let me know!

As luck would have it one came by my mates garage with a new clutch for the total of £100!

The plan is;

EXTENSIVE weight saving. but must retain dash and some type of door cards.

Smallest wheels/tyres possible to effectively reduce gear ratio.

Lower the gear ratio if possible with a final drive from some other box.

Strip engine down, skim head to up the CR

increase the overlap its VVTi so may be possible with the map as well.

Fit a motorbike exhaust manifold and no cat, similar CC and really cheap bumper mount bike can so reduce weight of system.

Lighten and balance flywheel.

decent air intake.

A good bit of porting and port matching

Possibly lighten and balance the pistons and rods a bit...

Make sure it has good compression.

Possibly get this little thing up to 80hp and 700kg

Pretty much oldschool back yard tuning for a few pennies and a bit of fun!

If anybody that actually knows how to get a few more ponies out of this I'm all ears, personally I cant see doing much more, more cam duration and lift but that's past the realms of what we can do i think!

or fit a 1400  but i think that would be obvious.

Sounds like fun!

Jus drill holes in everything but the chassis and post loads of progress pics on here!

Wise choice not picking a 1 litre 205, to this day it's still the slowest car I've ever driven

The 205 may be the slowest but i recon with the best suspension it would be the best handling..

309 rear axle with the thickest bars and additional ARB solid bushes and some Gaz shocks.

The yaris doesn't really have any option...

But the YARIS is here lovely silver 5door, only weigs 855kg (9kg) more than the 3door but has a 37mm longer wheel base.

We have corner weighting scales so after its super stripped we can weigh it and try and bodge some better suspension geometry.

Looking at the lowest profile 13" tyres to reduce the gear ratio, they seem to be 175/50/13

May be difficult finding one but a daihatsu charade gtti, must be the fastest production 1.0.

I'd still have gone for a 1.0 205, lighter than a yaris, set of bike carbs, diy head porting and an ebay exhaust manifold, all the revs.

Daihatsu is turbod so not aloud..

The 1.0 205 will never make the power of a yaris even after spending quite a lot on it... they are 45hp standard?

The yaris is 16v variable timing, and produces 69hp with a cat. As for the weight there is A HUGE amount to come off the yaris from air con to airbags to door bars heavy seats and any other safety crap...

Did just read that second time round, I need to pay more attention I think.

I would agree then with a yaris or maybe the micra.

If it was a 1.1 I would say 205 but the 1.0 always seemed so gutless.

Good luck with it.

The autograss boys have the choice of (I think) a classic mini 1000, Yaris 1000, micra (bubble shape) 1000 or I think a 106.

The Micra is the most competitive of those cars.

If I am not mistaken a Yaris utilitzes its VVTI to create the Atkinson cycle, hence if you really want to take advantage of the VVTI you will need a different set of cams. Also the OEM ECU's appear to be a tough nut to crack.

This information is Not what I wanted to hear but really good heads up!

We can put it on stand alone, and as for the Atkinson cycle that is ignored when at WOT hence it still produces 69hp and good fuel economy on cruise (when the Atkinson cycle is used?)

The rules state we can't change the cams either so no 9000rpm screamer

How stringent are the regulations? Could you get away with losing the bumpers, bonnet, wings, doors, tailgate, windows and roof? :D

Just thinking back to that video from years ago where somebody did this to a 205 to demonstrate the effects of weight loss on a timed run.

It needs to LOOK road legal. The boot and bonnet could be made from 1mm poly carbonate or a single sheet of.... something same goes for glass.

Bumpers cut down with no internal reinfocemnt.

It does need a half cage so that will be fixed to the rear suspension mounting points and then as much steel as possible cut away. Boot floor etc etc.

Very small fuel tank and scrap the original.

Bike battery, it will start the car 5 times before going dead so not an issue.

Bike Mirrors for better areo.

Anti drag tailgate spoiler

Anti drag gaffa tape for the edges that need smoothing.

Tested the car Last night and it does 104mph totally stock
