Current 205 Gti Markets - Lots Around?

Always follow ebay, pistonheads and classifieds listings to see what 205's are about, even though I wouldn't be getting another one.

 

Is it just me or has the market been flooded with 205 GTI's of late? When I was looking for mine a few years ago there were not many decent examples about.

 

Now there seems to be a fair few around for the £5K mark, which appear to be tidy decent examples.

 

Of course there are the crappy ones up for £13K+ - dreamers considering the state alot of them are in.

 

But there do seem to be a good choice available around the £5K mark for unrestored, running and MOT's examples.

 

Makes you think whether these type of cars at this price point are worth buying from an investment point of view (not that I would, as I prefer to use and drive mine and I've never bought an old car on an invesment basis but many do).

I look now and again. Vast majority of them are not worth the money being asked. Tatty drivers seats etc are as common today on £5000 cars as they were a few years ago on £500 cars. There are some what appear to be nice cars still out there, but for me a £5k 205 GTI at 25-30 years old needs to have records of a beam rebuild, and new dampers, at an absolute minimum!

Same thoughts here to be honest Tom, but I dare say these 5K cars are being bought up - perhaps by those who were not in the market in the £500 days.

 

I wasn't in the market then, my first came in slightly higher at £1650 in 2009 - seems like a bargain now as it was mint!

 

Your black one seemed to be a good buy, think I saw your post or comment on a facebook group.

 

Whereas I wouldn't look to get another 205, if I came across a decent running example for 2k I would be snapping another one up!

It was bound to happen sooner or later, quite a lot of people now turning to the 306 GTi6 as a cheaper option for a bit of fun.

 

I didn't buy mine as an investment, but it has become one and given it only ever came out on dry days anyway still gets the same amount of use.

Got mine in '96, was never a show car BUT now it's worth more than its banger days the wife doesn't mind me arsing about with it so much! RESULT!!

It's weird seeing how much I could, possibly, get for the car nowadays considering how much I bought it for originally back in late '08, but having been in the Ford RS scene it was only a matter of time before the 205 would eventually catch up with the same era of cars that had already gone up significantly price wise years before.

I usually have the odd look now & again just to keep an eye on what an equivalent car would cost me for insurance value purposes but also if the worst was to happen and I'd have replace it.

 

Not that I intend to get rid of mine. I'd already made that mistake back in mid '08 when I sold my Series 2 Escort RST just 3 months before the market went crazy for decent cars with low owners, full history, etc

Lol!!! Sold a mark1 golf gti 1600 with a years mot for £550 many moons ago and a mark1 xr2 for £560

haha this is truth. Now mine is worth pretty much 3-4 times what I paid for it the missus doesn't mind me spending time/money on it as much.

Are they selling though or constantly being relisted ? , I was watching a Miami blue one on ebay locally ,supposedly a limited edition one with full leather (1.6) "sold" for £5200 , no mot on it either , looked on gumtree a few hrs later and back for £6000 ! Far too many cars about (imo) for them to increase in value much ,you can have your pick of them with new ones being listed almost daily ! Rare they sure ain't unless you are looking a laser !

The cost of a coat of paint and a valet can now be recouped so the tired drivers can now get a refresh and hefty price tag. Perhaps I should value mine as really rare. It's still tatty.

I've not been following the market but given the noise over the last 12 months about rapidly increasing values I can only assume that more people who would otherwise have kept theirs a bit longer have now felt compelled to put them up for sale while values are on the increase.

 

My old 1.6 that I sold for £400 about 9 years ago, I reckon I could have kept and just spent a minimum on routine maintenance and probably got at least £3k off some nut case if I sold it now. Even more if I'd spent some money taking it right back to bone stock, which if you go back a few years to when parts were plentiful and cheap wouldn't even have been hard or expensive to do. All the while enjoying the car for what it was, and it was far far better than the Mi I replaced it with. Oh, regrets. Hey ho.

Nope..... Even rarer, it's a non original vw red, self painted ten years plus ago and now ranging from shiny red, through pink, to white with various panels now " crackle " finished. Probably half a days work and I could sell it as "rat look" or "scene". He'll the price just keeps on climbing!
