Best Way - Up Off All 4's On To Stands

Recommended Posts

dobboy

Planning on doing a bit of cleaning this week/end, but can't remember the best way to get the car right up off all 4's, onto the last pin on a standard/Halfords stand.

When I was only wanting the front high I usually just went on the front sub-frame, and put axle stands on as wide as I could on the subframe.

But I can't remember how I got the back right up safely, without moving the axle stands on the front, and where to put the stands on the rear.

A procedure would be handy if anyone has mastered it recently.... using one jack preferably.

Cheers

middle of the beam, make sure the jack will roll, otherwise it'll pull the front stands.

tbh I'm never a fan of raising a car in this way, have seen too many move and fall over, far safer to do one end/side at a time.

or get a 2 post lift...

Thanks WP, I wasn't sure lifting it by the beam was ok.

The jack not rolling very freely will explain why I've had problems in the past with cars when doing it on my tarmac driveway or my kind of rough concrete garage floor.

I know what I can do, I've got a big bit of 5mm plywood i'll use underneath the jack.

cheers!

Alsways a tad sketchy on 4 axel stands as the car never sits on all four and will wobble a little!

I use 5 tonne ratchet stands as the are a lot higher. Using a 3 tonne Trolly jack I lift the front up on the sub frame (my car isn't lowered) the. As WP says go up on the beam. I always make sure the rubber shoe is in the jack so you don't scratch thing.

That's why I try and have one end on ramps - too old to work under wobbly cars (lift next..). Depends on if you need all four wheels off at once though I guess.

Here I went up on the rear beam first, which then gave me access to the subframe from behind the front wheel (needed as lowered). Handbrake was off until the car was settled / horizontal, which allowed a degree of movement on the up.

If you have to go up on axle stands only then do it bit by bit / end to end, to reduce the angle / potential to pull over.

Barney, you've just reminded me how I do it!

Reverse into ramps at the back and then jack the front.

Cheers!

No worries! They'll have to be braced unless it's the MR2 / rear wheel drive..?

Oh, and whilst having the ramps point in the above direction gets you the most access, it also prevents the car moving forward when it's tail up..

Sorry for the hijack! I'm glad you posted this as I was thinking the same thing myself lately. I'm considering buying some ramps, can anyone recommend any? Is there an issue using them with a lowered car?

Depends on ramps, think I might need to use cut down scaffold boards at the front (iirc) but I'm ok reversing on to them at the back. You can buy proprietary extension things for ramps to reduce the angle.

I've spent the last 8 years plus restoring it and finally drove it for the first time the other day and got caught in a shower, the underside is filthy (thought I was going to cry). I need to get underneath it easily on a regular basis without causing any damage so they could be perfect, thank you
