Alternator Options For 1.9 Gti

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My alternator died yesterday, after a few minutes of smoking. I've used the forum search function but still not totally sure which alternators I can use....been browsing on eBay and ECP/CP4L etc. The ECP/CP4L suggest a 50 amp one but old forum posts suggest I need a 70 amp one, and as there's also a massive range of alternators listed for Peugeots and Citroens on eBay etc.

Please could anyone suggest a way of focussing on the one I need to buy? Either other makes/models of car, or part numbers. It's a 1991 Ph2 1.9 GTI with no a/c or PAS.

205 ownership is douing my head in at the moment......I'm clearly being punished for not using the car enough!

Cheers

1.9 GTi models originally had 70A alternators, but a 50A unit works fine and is what is generally available aftermarket.

I always found the difference strange, as it's not as if a 1.9 GTi really has any more electrical load than a 1.6 or diesel to explain the higher rated alternator.

I'd get it rebuilt if you can find anywhere local, had the one on my bmw done recently.

£35 for a new slip ring and brushes, new unit was £150+

Yes, we can them mitsubits*iti, as they didn't have a long life and are not easily rebuidable. Many have been replaced with Bosch units.
