Ignition Barrel

Recommended Posts

Charlie

Hi guys, me again.

I've got a strange ignition barrel problem - I've searched the forum, but can't see anything in particular that addresses it.

Basically, the spring has gone in the ignition barrel. I was just manually turning it back from the starter position , but recently it's been difficult to get the starter motor to engage.

I've ordered a new switch, which has a cross profile at the interface between ignition and the switch, but I'm hoping for the best on that one.

My question is, is there a spring in the barrel, or is it the switch, and have you guys seen a cross profile switch before?

Regards,

Charlie

The spring is in the barrel not the switch.

All the switches I have seen have a pattern I can best describe as a cross but with one half broken at 30 degrees.

Thanks Tom,

The switch on the car had that profile too.

Do you know if there's a way of replacing the spring in the barrel, or if there's how to guide anywhere?

Thanks,

Charlie

Not that I know of, and I have tried previously to get the ignition barrel to bits, and failed.

So, last question - does anyone have any experience of the ignition barrel sets off ebay, or should I just bite the bullet and spend £170 with Peugeot for the ignition barrel and switch combo?

Cheers,

Charlie

I have sourced Valeo ignition barrels from GSF in the past, I have seen them on the shelf at Neat Autos too.

barrels come with the switch, they were far less than £170.

I have successfully stripped a citroen ignition barrel but they are a Simplex item so slightly different, never tried to take a 205 one apart.

Thanks guys for the advice - I checked out GSF, but it was only £20 cheaper than main dealer - I ended up going with a £25 jobber off ebay - I'm not sure how long it'll last, but it seems to have done the trick for the moment.

Cheers,

Charlie
