Aftermarket Cast Pistons For 1.9Mi

I have found a NOS set of pistons for the 1.9Mi engine. They are cast, 83mm, made by a Hungarian company and use standard rings.

They have a big advantage and some drawbacks.

Advantages:

37.5mm compression height, so 10.8 compression

really cheap, almost free

Disadvantages:

30g heavier than DFW pistons (20 from the pin and 10 from the piston itself)

The rod is not laterally located inside the piston like the original.

Machining is not as accurate as the original, but the company has a good reputation as they mainly manufacture diesel replacement pistons.

 

Should I use them or not?

Pin also looks heavier. You'd have to use bushed 8V rods if those pistons don't centre the rod. The valve pockets look small too, assuming you're going to run a bit more cam timing to match the increase in CR.

Pins are 20g heavier, 30g total.

Is rod centering indispensable? I have seen pictures of forged pistons with the same gap between the rod and the piston.

As for the valve reliefs, you may be right. I'll have to check.

Now I see what you mean: 8v rods are fat and crankshaft located, and 16v are thinner, thus the need to be piston located.

Having 8v rods an pistons comes handy :D

Bushing the small end shouldn't be such a big problem.
