tdr_1976 41 1 Cars Posted March 13, 2017 (edited) Afternoon All I've just started work on wiring a J4 conversion on my XS, I took photos and made notes on my tablet of what wires were on the engine loom plugs as I was removing them prior to taking the engine out. My tablet died the other day and now I've lost all the information I had to identify the wires. I'm looking for help to find out where each of the wires go to in the car, so I can connect to the new engine loom I've made for the conversion, I cannot find any numbers on the wires to refer to the haynes manual wiring schematics Pink wire: Red wire: Yellow wire: Purple wire: If anyone could help me I'd very much appreciate it. Edited March 13, 2017 by tdr_1976
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted March 13, 2017 Can they be traced back to the 2 brown plugs next to the steering column?
tdr_1976 41 1 Cars Posted March 13, 2017 Hi mate - not sure, I'll have a look in a minute, cheers Could ideally do with someone who's got an XS to have a look where the wires go onto engine ancillaries.
Mikey S 29 1 Cars Posted March 13, 2017 Id be inclined to buzz them out with a multimeter back to the brown plugs and find the wire numbers. Wiring colour on a Peugeot is not much use as they could very well be different colours on another car.
tdr_1976 41 1 Cars Posted March 14, 2017 Thanks mate - I assume you mean the brown plugs into the fuse box? I'll give it a go this afternoon.
welshpug 1,666 Posted March 14, 2017 yes probably back to the fusebox or close to it as the loom layout is different to a gti, some of those may well not go into the fusebox at all if they're instrument cluster related.
tdr_1976 41 1 Cars Posted March 14, 2017 Hi Mei, Just been going through the schematics in the manual, they all run from the instrument cluster to the senders it seems - I'll take it out tomorrow and have a go buzzing the cables through. Thanks for your help chaps
tdr_1976 41 1 Cars Posted March 15, 2017 (edited) Took the instrument cluster off earlier and identified the wire numbers and where two of the three go; Pink wire No 7A: Ignition warning light - Alternator Red wire No 30: Oil pressure light - Oil press switch (front of block) Yellow wire No 32: +ve supply - Not sure? The three wires went into an orange connector to connect the engine to the car, trying to figure out where the yellow wire goes - looking at the diagram below it shouldn't go to the engine bay? Edited March 15, 2017 by tdr_1976

Everything else is now sorted.
jackherer 543 Posted March 24, 2017 Found out that the Yellow is a switched live for something, but not sure what, but It'll come in handy to supply the power the new ECU. Some switched lives don't stay live during cranking which is obviously not ideal for the ECU, I'd use wire 2 for the ECU switched live, which is the wire that supplies power to the coil if the wire numbers are different on an XS. tdr_1976 41 1 Cars Posted March 24, 2017 Thanks mate - good point! I'll make sure I get one of the feeds to the coil, I'll test it while cranking to ensure it stays live.
tdr_1976 41 1 Cars Posted April 3, 2017 Just for closure of this topic, I found that the yellow wire was a +ve supply for powering the choke light from the carb to the instrument cluster.
